Techniques for Protecting Overhead Lines in Winter Conditions
Author: Masoud Farzaneh
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030874559
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 400
Book Description
This book offers a comprehensive review of the various options for improving the performance of overhead power lines in winter conditions, taking into account both mechanical and electrical aspects. Experience within the CIGRE community reveals many strategies to protect overhead power lines from damage caused by heavy build-up of ice and snow or electrical issues such as insulator icing flashovers. The initial approach is to consider the predicted ice loads from the available databases. This is supplemented with some fundamental aspects of icing physics that affect accretion rate as well as factors in ice shedding on traditional (metal, ceramic) and novel treated surfaces. These ice physics concepts structure the ways to categorize and evaluate methods to reduce or prevent icing on conductors and ground wires or to prevent flashover of insulators. Many utilities in cold climate regions have developed and used methods and strategies to reduce ice loads using anti-icing (AI) and / or de-icing (DI) methods. In general, AI methods are used before or early during ice build-up, while DI methods are activated during and sometimes after ice build-up. The book describes and discusses some historical, operational, or potential AI / DI systems in the ice physics context. This supports a comprehensive review of AI coatings including concepts, relevant material properties, application methods, and finally test methods for characterizing the long-term performance.

Ice Accretion and Icing Technology
Author: Robert J Flemming
Publisher: SAE International
ISBN: 0768081203
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 122
Book Description
The effects of inflight atmospheric icing can be devastating to aircraft. Universities and industry have been hard at work to respond to the challenge of maintaining flight safety in all weather conditions. Proposed changes in the regulations for operation in icing conditions are sure to keep this type of research and development at its highest level. This is especially true for the effects of ice crystals in the atmosphere, and for the threat associated with supercooled large drop (SLD) icing. This collection of ten SAE International technical papers brings together vital contributions to the subject. Icing on aircraft surfaces would not be a problem if a material were discovered that prevented the freezing and accretion of supercooled drops. Many options that appeared to have promising icephobic properties have had serious shortfalls in durability. This title addresses, among other topics, the measurement techniques and the drop physics that apply to icing, certification for flight through ice crystal clouds and in supercooled large drops, improvements in predictive techniques, scaling methods, test facilities and techniques, and rotorcraft icing.

Advanced Heat Transfer
Author: Greg F. Naterer
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1351262238
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 537
Book Description
Advanced Heat Transfer, Second Edition provides a comprehensive presentation of intermediate and advanced heat transfer, and a unified treatment including both single and multiphase systems. It provides a fresh perspective, with coverage of new emerging fields within heat transfer, such as solar energy and cooling of microelectronics. Conductive, radiative and convective modes of heat transfer are presented, as are phase change modes. Using the latest solutions methods, the text is ideal for the range of engineering majors taking a second-level heat transfer course/module, which enables them to succeed in later coursework in energy systems, combustion, and chemical reaction engineering.

Mentoring in Education
Author: Cedric Cullingford
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317097262
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 255
Book Description
Mentoring has become a hot topic in a number of professional spheres in recent years, but its most important and longest-established location is in education. However, this volume is the first wide-ranging academic critique of the concept and its application. Offering both a critical and a practical stance, the authors examine the historical and cultural aspects of mentoring and the motivations behind it. They also explore the effects on the individuals involved and on the system, and examine the different approaches to the idea and implementation of mentoring. Drawing contributions from Europe, the USA and the Middle East, this work considers a wide range of empirical studies of mentoring from those countries that have invested in it, including case studies and analyses of current practice. The book makes a major contribution, not only on account of the international perspective it provides but also through analysis of cases in order to establish the difference between the much-vaunted theoretical advantages promoted by policy makers and the everyday realities and complexities that arise in a scheme entirely dependent on personal relationships.

Weather Radar
Author: Peter Meischner
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662052024
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 360
Book Description
With their images practically ubiquitious in the daily media, weather radar systems provide data not only for understanding weather systems and improving forecasts (especially critical for severe weather), but also for hydrological applications, flood warnings and climate research in which ground verification is needed for global precipitation measurements by satellites. This book offers an accessible overview of advanced methods, applications and modern research from the European perspective. An extensive introductory chapter summarizes the principles of weather radars and discusses the potential of modern radar systems, including Doppler and polarisation techniques, data processing, and error-correction methods. Addressing both specialist researchers and nonspecialists from related areas, this book will also be useful for graduate students planning to specialize in this field
