Book Description
In the years since that anthology was published, a new and fresh generation of Italian Canadian writers have emerged and have left a further, indelible mark on Canadian literature. Many of the new 'names' have won major prizes, both nationally and internationally, and have become the new 'stars' of Canadian and international literature. It is time for a new selection and a new anthology! This revised volume of Italian Canadian Voices includes short stories, excerpts from longer prose works, and poetry. It covers the 'first voices' of Italian Canadian literature, the familiar and well-established voices and, to the credit of the Editor, there are a significant number of new 'voices' represented in this volume. In this new Italian Canadian Voices you will find Pier Giorgio Di Cicco, Nino Ricci, George Amabile, Mary Di Michele, Len Gasparini, Alexandre Amprimoz, Caterina Edwards, Darlene Madott, Antonino Mazza, Carmine Starnino, Joseph Maviglia and many others. Each writer has already or is the process of leaving his or her unique voice and signature on the evolution of Canadian and international literature.

Such Hardworking People
Author: Franca Iacovetta
Publisher: McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
ISBN: 0773563156
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 329
Book Description
Iacovetta examines the changes many had to face during the transition from peasant worker in an under-developed, rural economy to wage-earner in an urban, industrial society. Their experiences in Canada, she reveals, were shaped by class, gender, and ethnicity as well as familial responsibilities, government policies, and racism. In addition to conducting numerous interviews, Iacovetta has drawn on recent scholarship in immigration, family, labour studies, oral history, and women's history. Although both women and men struggled and were exploited, Iacovetta shows that they found innovative ways to recreate cherished rituals and customs from their homeland and managed to derive a sense of dignity and honour from the labours they performed.

Looking Through My Mother's Eyes
Author: Giovanna Del Negro
Publisher: Guernica Editions
ISBN:
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 144
Book Description
By examining the undervalued realm of women's talk, this book explores the ways Italian immigrant women from Montreal cleverly use classic folk genres to stretch the boundaries of their culture. Through songs, lullabies, bawdy riddles and trickster tales, these women subvert, redefine and alter what it means to be Italian and female in North America. More than just a study of Italian Canadians, this essay delves into the broader themes of gender, immigration and ethnicity that speak compellingly to both scholarly and nonscholarly audiences alike.
