Pages : 246

Book Description
An attractive female student is found dead in the darkened gloom beneath an overpass . . . The DA moves quickly to pin the brutal slaying—a “mugging gone wrong”—on a homeless man known to frequent the area. As Detective “Gunny” Hawkins of the Bristol Police investigates the seemingly impressive evidence and facts of the case, he grows less and less sure that the DA has the right man . . . and certain that something far more insidious is going on than a mugging. It becomes clear to Hawkins that a murderer is on the loose in Bristol . . . one willing to kill again to cover his tracks, if necessary. In a race against time, Gunny works tirelessly to find the killer before he strikes again. For him, it is more than merely a fight for justice, but a battle at every turn with the political ambitions of the DA, his own superiors, and the court of public opinion that has already judged and convicted the incarcerated suspect. Will Gunny find the truth and bring the killer to justice in time? Will the killer prove to be too elusive and send an innocent man to prison? Will key players in this riveting crime drama overcome their past traumas, losses, alcohol and drug addiction, and other personal challenges to play their part in solving the case? Will the homeless community in Bristol help or hinder authorities in getting to the truth? Find out in Invisible Witnesses! Wayne Sheridan is a writer who draws from his years of experience in church leadership and service to challenge and encourage Christians to live in God’s truth, purpose, and power. His growth experiences include four years in the military during the Vietnam War, twenty years in hospital administration, six years in small business ownership, and fifteen years of directing a homeless mission in Bristol, Tennessee. Invisible Hands

Invisible Hands PDF Author: Corinne
Publisher: McSweeney's
ISBN: 1940450357
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 393

Book Description
The men and women in Invisible Hands reveal the human rights abuses occurring behind the scenes of the global economy. These narrators — including phone manufacturers in China, copper miners in Zambia, garment workers in Bangladesh, and farmers around the world — reveal the secret history of the things we buy, including lives and communities devastated by low wages, environmental degradation, and political repression. Sweeping in scope and rich in detail, these stories capture the interconnectivity of all people struggling to support themselves and their families. Narrators include Kalpona, a leading Bangladeshi labor organizer who led her first strike at 15; Han, who, as a teenager, began assembling circuit boards for an international electronics company based in Seoul; Albert, a copper miner in Zambia who, during a wage protest, was shot by representatives of the Chinese-owned mining company that he worked for; and Sanjay, who grew up in the shadow of the Bhopal chemical disaster, one of the worst industrial accidents in history.

Seeing Witness

Seeing Witness PDF Author: Jane Blocker
Publisher: U of Minnesota Press
ISBN: 081665476X
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 181

Book Description
The act of bearing witness can reveal much, but what about the figure of the witness itself? As contemporary culture is increasingly dominated by surveillance, the witness--whether artist, historian, scientist, government official, or ordinary citizen--has become empowered in realms from art to politics. In Seeing Witness, Jane Blocker challenges the implicit authority of witnessing through the examination of a series of contemporary artworks, all of which make the act of witnessing visible, open to inspection and critique.

Prepare the Way of the Lord

Prepare the Way of the Lord PDF Author: Kirsten Marie Hartvigsen
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter
ISBN: 3110253488
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 640

Book Description
This study analyzes an oral performance of the entire Gospel of Mark, with emphasis on involvement with characters and events, the emotional effects of such involvement, and how these processes maintain or shape the identity of those who hear the Gospel. Insights from cognitive poetics and psychonarratology are employed to illuminate the complex, cognitive processes that take place when audience members experience an oral performance of the Gospel. Consequently, this study expands previous research on the Gospel of Mark which was conducted on the basis of narrative criticism, orality criticism, and performance criticism by including cognitive aspects. Cognitive poetics and psychonarratology have to my knowledge not been extensively employed to illuminate an oral performance of the Gospel of Mark previously. This investigation provides: (1) An original, coherent theoretical and methodological framework; (2) An analysis of mechanisms which promote involvement with characters and events in the Markan narrative; (3) An examination of the prospective emotional effects of such involvement; (4) Reflections on the potential of these mechanisms with regard to identity maintenance or formation through cultural memory; (5) A cognitive poetic commentary on the entire Gospel of Mark.

There is no denying that the writers of the books of Acts through Revelation in the New Testament of the Bible believed wholeheartedly that Jesus was divine. This book examines Jesus' words and actions to see if he believed himself to be divine.
