Equivalence, Invariants and Symmetry

Equivalence, Invariants and Symmetry PDF Author: Peter J. Olver
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521478113
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 546

Book Description
Drawing on a wide range of mathematical disciplines, including geometry, analysis, applied mathematics and algebra, this book presents an innovative synthesis of methods used to study problems of equivalence and symmetry which arise in a variety of mathematical fields and physical applications. Systematic and constructive methods for solving equivalence problems and calculating symmetries are developed and applied to a wide variety of mathematical systems, including differential equations, variational problems, manifolds, Riemannian metrics, polynomials and differential operators. Particular emphasis is given to the construction and classification of invariants, and to the reductions of complicated objects to simple canonical forms. This book will be a valuable resource for students and researchers in geometry, analysis, algebra, mathematical physics and other related fields.

Kähler-Einstein Metrics and Integral Invariants

Kähler-Einstein Metrics and Integral Invariants PDF Author: Akito Futaki
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 354039172X
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 145

Book Description
These notes present very recent results on compact Kähler-Einstein manifolds of positive scalar curvature. A central role is played here by a Lie algebra character of the complex Lie algebra consisting of all holomorphic vector fields, which can be intrinsically defined on any compact complex manifold and becomes an obstruction to the existence of a Kähler-Einstein metric. Recent results concerning this character are collected here, dealing with its origin, generalizations, sufficiency for the existence of a Kähler-Einstein metric and lifting to a group character. Other related topics such as extremal Kähler metrics studied by Calabi and others and the existence results of Tian and Yau are also reviewed. As the rudiments of Kählerian geometry and Chern-Simons theory are presented in full detail, these notes are accessible to graduate students as well as to specialists of the subject.

On Invariants and the Theory of Numbers

On Invariants and the Theory of Numbers PDF Author: Leonard Eugene Dickson
Publisher: Courier Corporation
ISBN: 9780486438283
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 128

Book Description
Of enormous historical importance, this classic offered the first public formulation of Dickson's theory of invariants for modular forms and linear transformations. In many sections of the five lectures included here, Dickson aimed not at complete generality, but at an illumination of typical and suggestive topics. The introductory lecture is followed by sections on seminvariants of algebraic and modular binary forms; invariants of a modular group and formal invariants and covariants of modular forms; modular geometry and covariantive theory of a quadratic form in m variables, modulo 2; and a theory of plane cubic curves with a real inflexion point valid in ordinary and in modular geometry. 1914 ed.

Quantum Invariants

Quantum Invariants PDF Author: Tomotada Ohtsuki
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9789812811172
Category : Invariants
Languages : en
Pages : 516

Book Description
This book provides an extensive and self-contained presentation of quantum and related invariants of knots and 3-manifolds. Polynomial invariants of knots, such as the Jones and Alexander polynomials, are constructed as quantum invariants, i.e. invariants derived from representations of quantum groups and from the monodromy of solutions to the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation. With the introduction of the Kontsevich invariant and the theory of Vassiliev invariants, the quantum invariants become well-organized. Quantum and perturbative invariants, the LMO invariant, and finite type invariants of 3-manifolds are discussed. The ChernOCoSimons field theory and the WessOCoZuminoOCoWitten model are described as the physical background of the invariants. Contents: Knots and Polynomial Invariants; Braids and Representations of the Braid Groups; Operator Invariants of Tangles via Sliced Diagrams; Ribbon Hopf Algebras and Invariants of Links; Monodromy Representations of the Braid Groups Derived from the KnizhnikOCoZamolodchikov Equation; The Kontsevich Invariant; Vassiliev Invariants; Quantum Invariants of 3-Manifolds; Perturbative Invariants of Knots and 3-Manifolds; The LMO Invariant; Finite Type Invariants of Integral Homology 3-Spheres. Readership: Researchers, lecturers and graduate students in geometry, topology and mathematical physics."

Invariants of Homology 3-Spheres

Invariants of Homology 3-Spheres PDF Author: Nikolai Saveliev
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3662047055
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 229

Book Description
The book gives a systematic exposition of the diverse ideas and methods in the area, from algebraic topology of manifolds to invariants arising from quantum field theories. The main topics covered include: constructions and classification of homology 3-spheres, Rokhlin invariant, Casson invariant and its extensions, and Floer homology and gauge-theoretical invariants of homology cobordism. Many of the topics covered in the book appear in monograph form for the first time. The book gives a rather broad overview of ideas and methods and provides a comprehensive bibliography. The text will be a valuable source for both the graduate student and researcher in mathematics and theoretical physics.

Variable Illumination and Invariant Features for Detecting and Classifying Varnish Defects

Variable Illumination and Invariant Features for Detecting and Classifying Varnish Defects PDF Author: Ana Pérez Grassi
Publisher: KIT Scientific Publishing
ISBN: 3866445377
Category : Technology (General)
Languages : en
Pages : 170

Book Description
This work presents a method to detect and classify varnish defects on wood surfaces. Since these defects are only partially visible under certain illumination directions, one image doesn't provide enough information for a recognition task. A classification requires inspecting the surface under different illumination directions, which results in image series. The information is distributed along this series and can be extracted by merging the knowledge about the defect shape and light direction.
