Introduction to Quantum Mechanics 2

Introduction to Quantum Mechanics 2 PDF Author: Ibrahima Sakho
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119694949
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 310

Book Description
Quantum mechanics is the foundation of modern technology, due to its innumerable applications in physics, chemistry and even biology. This second volume studies Schrödingers equation and its applications in the study of wells, steps and potential barriers. It examines the properties of orthonormal bases in the space of square-summable wave functions and Dirac notations in the space of states. This book has a special focus on the notions of the linear operators, the Hermitian operators, observables, Hermitian conjugation, commutators and the representation of kets, bras and operators in the space of states. The eigenvalue equation, the characteristic equation and the evolution equation of the mean value of an observable are introduced. The book goes on to investigate the study of conservative systems through the time evolution operator and Ehrenfests theorem. Finally, this second volume is completed by the introduction of the notions of quantum wire, quantum wells of semiconductor materials and quantum dots in the appendices.

Introduction to a Submolecular Biology

Introduction to a Submolecular Biology PDF Author: Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0323161014
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 153

Book Description
Introduction to a Submolecular Biology focuses on the study of the electronic interactions of biological molecules. This book discusses the energy cycle of life, units and measures, electronic mobility, and problems of charge transfer. The three examples of charge transfer—quinone-hydroquinone, riboflavine (FMN) and serotonin, and cortisone I2 are elaborated. This text deliberates the problems and approaches on the mechanism of drug action, adenosine triphosphate (ATP), chemistry of the thymus gland, and living state. Brief remarks on water, ions, and metachromasia are also included. Other topics covered include the redox potentials, ionization potentials and electron affinities, orbital energies, electromagnetic coupling resonance transfer of energy, and semiconduction. This publication is a good source for biochemists, biologists, and specialists aiming to acquire basic knowledge of submolecular biology.

Theoretical Organic Chemistry

Theoretical Organic Chemistry PDF Author: C. Párkányi
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080542727
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 637

Book Description
This volume is devoted to the various aspects of theoretical organic chemistry. In the nineteenth century, organic chemistry was primarily an experimental, empirical science. Throughout the twentieth century, the emphasis has been continually shifting to a more theoretical approach. Today, theoretical organic chemistry is a distinct area of research, with strong links to theoretical physical chemistry, quantum chemistry, computational chemistry, and physical organic chemistry. The objective in this volume has been to provide a cross-section of a number of interesting topics in theoretical organic chemistry, starting with a detailed account of the historical development of this discipline and including topics devoted to quantum chemistry, physical properties of organic compounds, their reactivity, their biological activity, and their excited-state properties.

Liquid Crystals of One- and Two-Dimensional Order

Liquid Crystals of One- and Two-Dimensional Order PDF Author: W. Helfrich
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642678483
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 414

Book Description
This conference on liquid crystals of one- and two-dimensional order and their applications is the third in a series of European conferences devoted mainly to smectic liquid crystals. Its purpose was to bring together people working on the frontiers of the field of liquid crystals. Ordinary nematic liquid crystals were left out in order to limit the size of the meeting. The number of registered participants still reached 148. The conference shed new light on the classification of smectic mesophases, especially through the interaction of the Halle (GDR) and Hull (England) groups. It saw lively discussions on the famous blue phase of cholesterics. There were illuminating presentations on lyotropic nematic liquid crystals, on reentrant nematics, mesomorphic polymer phases, and related subjects. Much room was given to bilayers, monolayers, and interfaces, mostly to further the use of the concepts and methods of liquid crystal physics in exploring bio membranes. Other topics were device applications of smectic and cholesteric liquid crystals and nematic polymers, both of which hold promise of techno logical breakthroughs, apart from their scientific interest.
