Publisher: World Bank Publications
ISBN: 9780821344651
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en

Book Description
Fundamental changes must take place in how water is allocated, planned, and managed if India's goals for continued economic growth and improved social and environmental conditions are to be met. India's needs are especially severe due to its rapidly developing water constraints, environmental problems, huge population, regional inequalities in water availability along with the federal administrative structure and rapid demographic and economic growth. The findings of 'Inter-Sectoral Water Allocation, Planning and Management' are that a comprehensive approach is needed in order to implement change. The book provides detailed recommendations in the areas of policy making, legislation and regulations, institutions, economic incentives, technology, and public information.

The Economics of Water PDF Author: Georg Meran
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030484858
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 312

Book Description
This open access textbook provides a concise introduction to economic approaches and mathematical methods for the study of water allocation and distribution problems. Written in an accessible and straightforward style, it discusses and analyzes central issues in integrated water resource management, water tariffs, water markets, and transboundary water management. By illustrating the interplay between the hydrological cycle and the rules and institutions that govern today’s water allocation policies, the authors develop a modern perspective on water management. Moreover, the book presents an in-depth assessment of the political and ethical dimensions of water management and its institutional embeddedness, by discussing distribution issues and issues of the enforceability of human rights in managing water resources. Given its scope, the book will appeal to advanced undergraduate and graduate students of economics and engineering, as well as practitioners in the water sector, seeking a deeper understanding of economic approaches to the study of water management.

Evaluating Water Institutions and Water Sector Performance

Evaluating Water Institutions and Water Sector Performance PDF Author: R. Maria Saleth
Publisher: World Bank Publications
ISBN: 9780821345610
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 112

Book Description
Physical limits to fresh water expansion—an emerging reality in many parts of the world—make absolute water scarcity inevitable. The inability of the already developed water supply to meet an ever-growing demand for fresh water also makes the emergence of relative water scarcity unavoidable. Water scarcity—both in its absolute and relative forms—gets accentuated further by an increasing premium attached to water quality and ecological sustainability. The water sector has undergone remarkable changes in recent years. While past achievements were associated mainly with investment in new physical structures, recent developments in the water sector are associated to a greater extent with improved management and institutional changes. Although both the nature and direction of these institutional changes vary by country-specific economic, political, cultural and resource realities, there are clearly identifiable trends and patterns. This report suggests a new methodology to shed light on the process of institution-performance interaction. It demonstrates the use of the methodology by applying it to an extensive cross-country data set, and by deriving policy guidance based on the results. The authors aim to stimulate thought and debate about methodologies and strategies to be used in order to evaluate institutional change and institution-performance interactions in the water sector.
