The Livestock and Meat Situation

The Livestock and Meat Situation PDF Author: United States Department Of Agriculture

Book Description
Excerpt from The Livestock and Meat Situation: November 6, 1956 In 1956 about million cattle and calves are being slaughtered. This is 1 million more than in 1955 and almost the same as the number produced less death losses. Thus, little change is likely in the 1957 cattle inventory. Nor will the count of individual kinds of cattle change much. The cow herd probably is nearly stable. The number of young stock on farms will remain very large, but probably will contain fewer heavy steers and more calves than last January. With this prospective inventory, cattle and calf slaughter may be fully as great in 1957 as in 1956. However, slaughter weights may average lighter than in 1956, when those through June were the heaviest for any recent year. Slaughter in 1957 will include as namr or more fed cattle, though these too will be lighter. With supplies staying cyclically large, no marked general change in cattle prices is likely. Prices of fed cattle will probably decline seasonally this winter but almost certainly will not repeat their low of early 1956. They may stay above comparable 1956 prices through the first half-year. As the supply of fed cattle for slaughter in 1957 will probably be distributed more evenly than in 1956, a price rise next sumner equal to that of this summer is not likely. However, weather and other conditions will affect actual price trends during the year. Sheep and lambs, like cattle, are neither increasing nor decreasing in number. Expansion in the East is offset by reductions in parts of the Wes Since May, lamb prices have been higher than last year, partly in reflecti of improving prices for meat animals generally. The higher level may con tinne through the first half of 1957. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Beef Cattle Industries of Central America and Panama (Classic Reprint)

The Beef Cattle Industries of Central America and Panama (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: J. Phillip Rourk

Book Description
Excerpt from The Beef Cattle Industries of Central America and Panama The failure of the livestock industries of Central America and Panama to respond more vigorously to the stimulus of the increased demand for meat and the concomitant higher prices is the result of the interaction of numerous factors. Among these, the most important are probably the present concentration of cattle on lands of low natural fertility in regions subject to a prolonged dry season, the primitive and extensive systems of management which prevail, and the failure of official entities and private credit institutions to provide adequate technical and financial assistance. Though the situation varies from country to country and reliable and precise data are not available, the livestock industries of Central America and Panama are still characterized by a very slow rate of increase in the cattle population as a result of a low calving percentage and a high rate of mortality among both young and adult stock. Available evidence points to an effective average calving percentage (calves weaned) of well under 50 percent and an adult mortality rate of over 10 percent. Types and Market Classes, of Live Stock (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: H. W. Vaughan

Book Description
Excerpt from Types and Market Classes, of Live Stock During the past eight years there has been added to the curriculum in most of our agricultural colleges a new course dealing with the types of farm animals, market demands, and market classes of live stock. More properly speaking, it has been inserted at the very beginning of the work in animal hus bandry, forming, as it logically does, the foundation course in the study of that important branch of agriculture. This is a soundly practical study; the student is brought to a much clearer conception of values and a much better appreciation of live stock than was possible under the former system 'of teaching. Recognizing the need of a text on this subject which could be placed in the hands of students, the writer prepared and printed a loose-leaf edition which has been used at Ohio State University during the past three years. This met with favor able comment, and requests have been made that the material be put into book form. After careful revision and the addition of a number of illustrations, this is now attempted in the hope that students and teachers and the general reader as well may find such a book useful. The arrangement of the subject-matter corresponds to the order usually followed in teaching, but may be varied as desired, each section of the book - Cattle, Sheep, Hogs, and Horses - being complete in itself. The writer desires to express his indebtedness to numer ous commission men, buyers for the packing houses, and others who have kindly given their assistance during his quests for information, and to numerous experiment station publications, particularly the series of excellent bulletins issued by the Illi nois Station setting forth the results of their studies of the Chicago and St. Louis markets. Acknowledgment of valued assistance is due my present co-workers, and also Professors C. S. Plumb and F. R. Marshall at Ohio State University.
