Against Technology

Against Technology PDF Author: Steven E. Jones
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135522391
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 271

Book Description
This book addresses the question of what it might mean today to be a Luddite--that is, to take a stand against technology. Steven Jones here explains the history of the Luddites, British textile works who, from around 1811, proclaimed themselves followers of "Ned Ludd" and smashed machinery they saw as threatening their trade. Against Technology is not a history of the Luddites, but a history of an idea: how the activities of a group of British workers in Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire came to stand for a global anti-technology philosophy, and how an anonymous collective movement came to be identified with an individualistic personal conviction. Angry textile workers in the early nineteenth century became romantic symbols of a desire for a simple life--certainly not the original goal of the actions for which they became famous. Against Technology is, in other words, a book about representations, about the image and the myth of the Luddites and how that myth was transformed over time into modern neo-Luddism.

Operations Research Calculations Handbook, Second Edition

Operations Research Calculations Handbook, Second Edition PDF Author: Dennis Blumenfeld
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9781420052411
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 256

Book Description
A handbook in the truest sense of the word, the first edition of the Operations Research Calculations Handbook quickly became an indispensible resource. While other books available tend to give detailed information about specific topics, this one contains comprehensive information and results useful for real-world problem solving. Reflecting the breadth and depth of growth in the field, the scope of the second edition has been expanded to cover several additional topics. And as with the first edition, it focuses on presenting analytical results and formulas that allow quick calculations and provide understanding of system models. See what’s in the Second Edition: New chapters include Order Statistics, Traffic Flow and Delay, and Heuristic Search Methods New sections include Distance Norms, Hyper-Exponential and Hypo-Exponential Distributions Newly derived formulas and an expanded reference list Like its predecessor, the new edition of this handbook presents the analytical results and formulas needed in the scientific applications of operations research and management. It continues to provide quick calculations and insight into system performance. Presenting practical results and formulas without derivations, the material is organized by topic and offered in a concise format that allows ready-access to a wide range of results in a single volume. The field of operations research encompasses a growing number of technical areas, and uses analyses and techniques from a variety of branches of mathematics, statistics, and other scientific disciplines. And as the field continues to grow, there is an even greater need for key results to be summarized and easily accessible in one reference volume. Yet many of the important results and formulas are widely scattered among different textbooks and journals and are often hard to find in the midst of mathematical derivations. This book provides a one-stop resource for many important results and formulas needed in operations research and management science applications.

Marketing Scales Handbook

Marketing Scales Handbook PDF Author: Gordon C. Bruner
Publisher: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
ISBN: 9781514321843
Category : Marketing research
Languages : en
Pages : 602

Book Description
La 4e de couv.indique : "This is the seventh volume in the long-running Marketing Scales Handbook series. The purpose of the book is to help readers benefit from vetted research by some of the world's consumer behavior experts. By learning about the measures used by the experts, the hope is that those who borrow the well-developed scales rather than using "quick-and-dirty" measures will achieve higher quality insights in their research activities. The book contains reviews of 364 multi-item measures that were reported in one or more articles published in top marketing journals in 2010 and 2011. Each review provides the scale items (questions or statements) as well as information about the scale's origin, previous users, and measurement quality. The scales are useful when wanting to accurately measure theoretical constructs such as attitudes, emotions, and traits in surveys and experiments with a wide variety of participants such as consumers, viewers, patients, patrons, or citizens. Many of the measures could also be used in business settings when studying employees and/or administrators. The scales reviewed in this volume are primarily new and are not in the previous volumes of the series."
