Intercultural Education and Literacy

Intercultural Education and Literacy PDF Author: Sheila Aikman
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing
ISBN: 902729867X
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 254

Book Description
Indigenous peoples around the world are calling for control over their education in order to reaffirm their identities and defend their rights. In Latin America the indigenous peoples, national governments and international organisations have identified intercultural education as a means of contributing to this process. The book investigates education for and by indigenous peoples and examines the relationship between theoretical and methodological developments and formal practice. An ethnographic study of the Arakmbut people of the Peruvian Amazon, provides a detailed example of the social, cultural and educational change indigenous peoples are experiencing, an insight into Arakmbut oral learning and teaching practices as well as a review of their conceptualisations of knowledge, pedagogy and evaluation. The models of intercultural education being promoted by Latin American governments are, nevertheless, biliterate and school-based. The book analyses indigenous and non-indigenous models based on different conceptualisations of culture and curriculum in the context of the Arakmbut search for an education which respects their dynamic oral cultural traditions and identity, provides them with a qualitatively relevant education about the wider society and addresses the intercultural lives they lead.

Interculturalism, Education and Dialogue

Interculturalism, Education and Dialogue PDF Author: Tina Besley
Publisher: Global Studies in Education
ISBN: 9781433115141
Category : Multicultural education
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Intercultural dialogue is a concept and discourse that dates back to the 1980s. It is the major means for managing diversity and strengthening democracy within Europe and beyond. It has been adopted by the United Nations, UNESCO and the Council of Europe as the basis for interreligious and interfaith initiatives and has become increasingly associated with a liberal theory of modernity and internationalism that presupposes freedom, democracy, human rights and tolerance. It is now the dominant paradigm for 'cultural policy' and the educational basis for the development of intercultural understanding. Governments have placed their hope in intercultural education as the way to avoid the worst excesses of globalization, especially exclusion and marginalization, and the problems of xenophobia and racism that afflict European societies. Interculturalism, Education and Dialogue is an international collection by renowned scholars who examine the ideological underpinnings of the European model and its global applications. It explores the historical, philosophical and educational dimensions of intercultural dialogue.

Visions for Intercultural Music Teacher Education

Visions for Intercultural Music Teacher Education PDF Author: Heidi Westerlund
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030210294
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 224

Book Description
This open access book highlights the importance of visions of alternative futures in music teacher education in a time of increasing societal complexity due to increased diversity. There are policies at every level to counter prejudice, increase opportunities, reduce inequalities, stimulate change in educational systems, and prevent and counter polarization. Foregrounding the intimate connections between music, society and education, this book suggests ways that music teacher education might be an arena for the reflexive contestation of traditions, hierarchies, practices and structures. The visions for intercultural music teacher education offered in this book arise from a variety of practical projects, intercultural collaborations, and cross-national work conducted in music teacher education. The chapters open up new horizons for understanding the tension-fields and possible discomfort that music teacher educators face when becoming change agents. They highlight the importance of collaborations, resilience and perseverance when enacting visions on the program level of higher education institutions, and the need for change in re-imagining music teacher education programs.

Intercultural Education: Critical Perspectives, Promising Practices, and Contentious Challenges

Intercultural Education: Critical Perspectives, Promising Practices, and Contentious Challenges PDF Author: Cinzia Pica-Smith
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781536169294
Category : Culturally relevant pedagogy
Languages : en
Pages : 363

Book Description
Intercultural Education: Critical Perspectives, Pedagogical Challenges, and Promising Practices, co-edited by Cinzia Pica-Smith, Carmen N. Veloria and Rina Manuela Contini, is an edited volume that brings together scholars from across the globe who delve critically into the frameworks of interculturalism and intercultural education to go beyond the European context, to reorient our perspectives on the frameworks and engage in new conversations across various institutional contexts and countries. The scholars in this volume explore and critique intercultural education on localized alliances, epistemologies, pedagogy, multi-sector collaborations, and language policies. Some scholars contextualize this phenomenon by acknowledging the on-going struggles for recognition, representation, and heritage language maintenance; while others write about the institutionalization that brings about warped narratives, produces challenges and tensions, and the interplay of power dynamics that impacts practice which is ultimately felt most by practitioners and students. Finally, authors move beyond this critique by working with diverse communities, expanding the dialogue to include multiple perspectives, and promoting the adaptation of indigenous practices in new ways. The scholar-practitioners in this collection engage with the theory and practice of intercultural education to describe, interrogate, critique, and put forth recommendations for future iterations of policy and practice. They do not stop at historicizing, contextualizing, and problematizing the conceptual framework. These scholars go beyond analysis and provided us a roadmap to real-life possibilities for changes to the framework of intercultural education that will manifest in policy and curricula that will impact the institution of schools, translating, ultimately, into real-time change in the lives of children and their communities.
