O processo de demarcação das fronteiras brasileiras envolveu a controvérsia de suas reais localizações e das diferentes designações que recebeu pelas metrópoles espanhola e portuguesa no período colonial, constituindo alvo de inúmeras disputas e debates posteriores. Além da condução diplomacia, o conhecimento científico (astronomia, geodesia, geografia) teve um papel fundamental na definição das nossas fronteiras. Não podemos ignorar a participação de indivíduos, muitos desconhecidos, que sacrificaram suas vidas na defesa dos interesses nacionais. Os litígios de fronteiras serviram para estimular sentimentos patrióticos, atraindo a participação de personalidades do cenário intelectual e político, bem como de instituições cientificas e culturais nestes debates. Habilmente, José da Silva Paranhos Junior, o Barão do Rio Branco, resolveu antigas pendências fronteiriças. Na elaboração das defesas nos casos da Argentina, da Guiana Francesa e da Bolívia, examinados nesta obra, Rio Branco promoveu uma alentada pesquisa documental nos arquivos europeus e uma intensa troca epistolar com intelectuais brasileiros e europeus, que de uma maneira ou de outra, nos legaram contribuições originais sobre o território nacional.
