Long Term Interest Rates

Long Term Interest Rates PDF Author: Daryl Watkins
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781634837484
Category : Interest rates
Languages : en
Pages : 93

Book Description
The long-term interest rate is a central variable in the macroeconomy. It matters to borrowers looking to start a business or purchase a home; to lenders weighing the risks and rewards of extending credit; to savers preparing for college or retirement; and to policymakers gauging the state of the economy and financing government expenditure. The global financial crisis and the aggressive policy response pushed long-term interest rates in the United States and in many advanced economies to historically low levels. But today's low-rate environment is not just a cyclical story. Interest rates had been falling worldwide for nearly twenty years before the crisis. Despite the magnitude and persistence of the secular downtrend, the explanation for the decline is one of the most vexing questions faced by macroeconomists today. The future path of interest rates is even less clear. This book surveys the recent thinking on the many drivers of long-term interest rates in recent decades and going forward. In addition, this book provides a speech by Federal Reserve Board Governor Bernanke at the Sandridge Lecture which discusses the global saving glut and the U.S. current deficit.

International Financial Integration

International Financial Integration PDF Author: Mr.Gian Milesi-Ferretti
Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN: 1451850905
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 46

Book Description
In recent decades, the foreign assets and liabilities of advanced economies have grown rapidly relative to GDP, with the increase in gross cross-holdings far exceeding changes in the size of net positions. Moreover, the portfolio equity and FDI categories have grown in importance relative to international debt stocks. This paper describes the broad trends in international financial integration for a sample of industrial countries and seeks to explain the cross-country and time-series variation in the size of international balance sheets. It also examines the behavior of the rates of return on foreign assets and liabilities, relating them to "market" returns.

Co-Movements in Long-Term Interest Rates and the Role of PPP-Based Exchange Rate Expectations

Co-Movements in Long-Term Interest Rates and the Role of PPP-Based Exchange Rate Expectations PDF Author: Jan Marc Berk
Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN: 1451850344
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 29

Book Description
This paper investigates international co-movement in bond yields by testing for uncovered interest parity (UIP). Existing work is supplemented by focusing on long instead of short-term interest rates and by employing exchange rate expectations derived from purchasing power parity (PPP) instead of actual outcomes. Among the major currencies during 1975-97, the paper does not find a further increase in co-movement beyond that associated with the wave of financial market liberalization in the early 1980s. Given the similarity between PPP-based UIP tests and those employing actual exchange rate outcomes, the value added of the former lies mainly with data availability.

The Integration of World Capital Markets

The Integration of World Capital Markets PDF Author: Mr.Michael Mussa
Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN: 145195039X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 66

Book Description
This paper discusses the extent to which national capital markets have become linked, and identifies several of the more important consequences of that increased degree of integration. Alternative approaches to the measurement of capital market integration are reviewed, including deviations from the law of one price, differences between actual and optimally diversified portfolios, correlations between domestic investment and domestic saving, and cross-country links in consumption behavior. Two recent episodes of large-scale international capital flows—namely, the turmoil in the European Monetary System in the fall of 1992, and the surge of capital inflows into Latin America during the last three years—are examined for insights into the workings of today’s global capital market. Finally, the paper offers some concluding remarks on the future development of international capital markets, on exchange rate management, on alternative approaches to living with larger and more influential financial markets, and on the financing of investment in the formerly centrally planned economies.

Understanding the Use of Long-term Finance in Developing Economies

Understanding the Use of Long-term Finance in Developing Economies PDF Author: Mr.Maria Soledad Martinez Peria
Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN: 1475595751
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 28

Book Description
This short paper reviews recent literature on the use of long-term finance in developing economies (relative to advanced ones) to identify where long-term financing occurs, and what role different financial intermediaries and markets play in extending this type of financing. Although banks are the most important providers of credit, they do not seem to offer long-term financing. Capital markets have grown since the 1990s and can provide financing at fairly long terms. But few firms use these markets. Only some institutional investors provide funding at long-term maturities. Governments might help to expand long-term financing, although with limited policy tools.

Benefits and Costs of International Financial Integration

Benefits and Costs of International Financial Integration PDF Author: Pierre-Richard Agénor
Publisher: World Bank Publications
ISBN:
Category : Capital movements
Languages : en
Pages : 68

Book Description
This literature review joins with recent studies in arguing that financial integration must be carefully prepared and managed to ensure that the benefits outweigh the short-run risks. But in contrast with some other studies, it adopts a more skeptical view of the benefits of capital flows other than foreign direct investment.

Reaping the Benefits of Financial Globalization

Reaping the Benefits of Financial Globalization PDF Author: Mr.Ayhan Kose
Publisher: International Monetary Fund
ISBN: 1589067487
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 46

Book Description
Financial globalization has increased dramatically over the past three decades, particularly for advanced economies, while emerging market and developing countries experienced more moderate increases. Divergences across countries stem from different capital control regimes, and factors such as institutional quality and domestic financial development. Although, in principle, financial globalization should enhance international risk sharing, reduce macroeconomic volatility, and foster economic growth, in practice its effects are less clear-cut. This paper envisages a gradual and orderly sequencing of external financial liberalization and complementary reforms in macroeconomic policy framework as essential components of a successful liberalization strategy.
