Structural Competency in Mental Health and Medicine

Structural Competency in Mental Health and Medicine PDF Author: Helena Hansen
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3030105253
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 240

Book Description
This book documents the ways that clinical practitioners and trainees have used the “structural competency” framework to reduce inequalities in health. The essays describe on-the-ground ways that clinicians, educators, and activists craft structural interventions to enhance health outcomes, student learning, and community organizing around issues of social justice in health and healthcare. Each chapter of the book begins with a case study that illuminates a competency in reorienting clinical and public health practice toward community, institutional and policy level intervention based on alliances with social agencies, community organizations and policy makers. Written by authors who are trained in both clinical and social sciences, the chapters cover pedagogy in classrooms and clinics, community collaboration, innovative health promotion approaches in non-health sectors and in public policies, offering a view of effective care as structural intervention and a road map toward its implementation. Structural Competency in Mental Health and Medicine is a cutting-edge resource for psychiatrists, primary care physicians, addiction medicine specialists, emergency medicine specialists, nurses, social workers, public health practitioners, and other clinicians working toward equality in health.

Book Description
The ultimate aim of the study is to make a contribution to include HIV and AIDS content into the different programmes at tertiary institutions. A secondary aim is to contribute to the development of an institutional framework for a sustainable commitment to prevent and control the spread of HIV and AIDS. With this study it is hoped to start addressing the impact of HIV and AIDS on students at tertiary institutions. It is essential to develop curricula that prepare students for a new reality, which threaten their future. This study shows that there is a need to raise students' awareness of HIV and AIDS through mainstream curricula. Chapter 1 deals with the development of my personal interest and motivation for the investigation of this particular problem, and my professional growth during the study. In order to conceptualise the problem and related factors, Chapter 2 focuses on a literature review, which examines the research and findings of others working in the field. To integrate HIV and AIDS into the curricula, it is necessary to introduce changes and to gain insight into cultural patterns, which influence human behaviour with regard to sexuality..

Book Description
As key members of the health care team, nurses at all levels must work with communities and other health professionals to prevent the spread of HIV infection. Interventions are required in the areas of human resources management, community development, and the provision of health and human services. Work in this area is associated, however, with a range of complex social, ethical, legal, and technical problems that require a thorough knowledge of the basic concepts of HIV/AIDS. This booklet was prepared by the World Health Organization's Regional Office for the Western Pacific to provide nurses with background information and to create a foundation for the further development of professional skills in the areas of HIV prevention and clinical care. It covers basic facts about HIV and AIDS, the clinical profile of HIV infection, HIV transmission, and HIV screening. A glossary of terms used in this overview is included to facilitate comprehension. This is the first in a series of booklets that comprise the HIV/AIDS Reference Library for Nurses.

Book Description
The ultimate aim of this study is to show the status of HIV and AIDS implementation in secondary schools. HIV and AIDS was declaired a national disaster and teachers were expected to infuse and integrate HIV and AIDS messages in their teaching subjects. It is important to present to the students a curricula that prepares them to the new realities that threaten their very existence. It is hoped that students will be in a position to make informed choices and decisions concerning their sexual lives; thereby scale down the spread of AIDS pandemic. The study shows that schools lack adequate learning-teaching materials on HIV and AIDS; and that teachers and students hold positive attitudes toward the teaching of HIV and AIDS.However, due to inadequate in-servicing on integration and infusion of HIV and AIDS, teachers were not using interactive teaching methods with their students. Teachers also expressed a desire that HIV and AIDS should be taught as a 'stand-alone' subject.
