Inventing four characters, two law professors and their respective students, the author examines the state of law education in the U.S. by having his characters debate about teaching styles in a hypothetical law school. The professors are both involved in the teaching of first year criminal law case. One is attached to doctrine and solid analysis, while the other is concerned about the social context in which law and the courts exist. Issues of the treatment of women and Native Americans are raised, as is the notion that the development of law should be understood in historical context rather than as stone tablets handed down from the mountaintop.
