Excerpt from Insects Injurious to Fruits It has been the aim of the author of this work to bring together all the important facts relating to insects known to be injurious to fruits in all parts of Canada and the United States, to add to the information thus obtained the knowl edge he has acquired of the habits and life-history of many of our insect pests by an experience of over twenty years as a fruit-grower and a student of entomology, and to pre sent the results in as concise and plain a manner as possible, avoiding all scientific phraseology except such as is necessary to accuracy. The arrangement adopted under the several headings, by which the insect pests which attack the different parts of the tree or vine under consideration are grouped together, will, it is hoped, with the aid of the illustrations, greatly facilitate the determination of any injurious species. When having before him its history briefly traced and the remedies which have been found most useful in subduing the insect, the reader will at once be enabled to decide as to the best meth ods to be employed. Excerpt from Handbook of Insects Injurious to Orchard and Bush Fruits: With Means of Prevention and Remedy In the present volume I have endeavoured to collect into a convenient form for reference the most important points of information which we possess regarding the life-histories and habits of the insects of which the attacks are commonly injurious to a serious extent to hardy fruit in this country, together with notes of methods of prevention and remedy which have been found serviceable at a paying rate. Some of the attacks mentioned have long been known of, but there are few if any of these of which we have not gained some additional information during the past few years, and of many of the others we have only lately become possessed of the whole life-history; whilst others, again, have lately shown themselves as perfect scourges (in our present large scale of fruit growing) which even within the last four or five years were wholly unknown to us as fruit pests. In the following pages (as temperatures and weather influences have great effect on insect life and number of yearly broods), I have endeavoured, as far as possible, to give the information from observations in this country sent to myself during the past twenty-one years, and published as received in my successive Annual Reports; these notes being now condensed into a continuous account of each infestation, but as far as possible in the words of the various contributors. Excerpt from The Insects Destructive to Fruits Insects are among the most formidable enemies to success ful fruit-culture. The losses occasioned by the plum curculio alone amount to more than a million of dollars annually. Orchardists are sometimes deterred, by the attacks of this in sect, from attempts to raise the apricot, nectarine, peach, and plum; and the market supply of apples and pears is often much disfigured by it. The apple-worm, or codling-moth, is even a more formidable insect pest. New York fruit-growers alone yearly furnish $2, worth of apples and worth of pears to feed this insect; and other similar apple-growing States report nearly as large an annual loss from its ravages. The depredations of many other insect pests, like the apple tree and the peach-tree borers, the canker-worms, the tent caterpillars, the apple maggot, and the pear psylla, each causes annual losses amounting to several hundred thousand dollars. As a general rule those remedial measures are of little value, which attempt merely to repel insects without destroy ing them.
