Aunque la gestión del conocimiento ha sido estudiada en profundidad a partir de la década de los 90, especialmente, la gestión estratégica, innovación, comercio, o administración de las empresas, todavía quedan muchos interrogantes en cómo se articula, se transfiere y las barreras para su gestión, sobre todo cuando hablamos de las actividades tácticas internas en las que afectan a personal que podíamos llamar de “oficios”, tales como el mantenimiento y montajes industriales o explotación y conducción de las instalaciones. En este trabajo de investigación se aborda el problema y la incidencia que supone introducir técnicas de gestión del conocimiento en esta área de importante transcendencia para la empresa, analizando la repercusión que la adecuada captación, generación, transmisión y utilización del conocimiento, puede afectar a las actividades estratégicas que desempeña. Tras una descripción del estado de la situación y los principios básicos de la gestión del conocimiento y de la ingeniería del mantenimiento, se ha realizado un estudio cualitativo en diversas empresas dentro de las áreas de explotación y mantenimiento, con el fin de conocer las barreras y facilitadores, que dicho personal implicado encuentra para que se produzca una adecuada transmisión y utilización de dicho conocimiento fundamental, definiéndose las actividades estratégicas que realizan los departamentos de mantenimiento, y la manera en que repercuten en la empresa. En consecuencia, este documento persigue proporcionar referencias reales y juicios de expertos que expliquen en cómo y por qué el conocimiento y su gestión es tan relevante en el área de mantenimiento de la empresa. Esas son las razones que justificarían porqué gestionar el conocimiento en dicha área, supone un capital intangible, pero que suficientemente analizado se observa su valor tangible que afecta directamente a la organización.
