Book Description
Excerpt from Influence of Field-Applied Chemical Additive on Dust Levels in Cotton Twelve lots of seed cotton were harvested at random from locations in the field. Two lots were harvested without oil. For the remaining 10 lots, the intent was to vary the oil content as uniformly as possible from to percent. The design was chosen to allow regression analysis for two important reasons. First, the main objective of the test was to determine the effect of additive level on the quality measure. Although 3 or 4 points (as would be available from a randomized block design of the same total number of lots) can define a regression coefficient (bl the confidence is improved with 12 points. Second, preliminary trials indicated that the amount of oil in a lot would vary more than arbitrary treatment boundaries. This can be partially explained by the relatively small difference in ratios desired and unavoidable errors in estimating harvest rate and oil trans fer rate within the air delivery system. Book Description
Excerpt from Harvesting and Processing Factors Affecting Cotton-Dust Levels in the Card Room Highest dust levels in a cotton mill are generally found in the preparation and carding areas. Production of dust is influenced in part by the dust - generation potential of the cotton being processed. Among the factors thought to affect the dust-generation potential of cotton are variety, area of production, cultural and harvesting. Practices, and type and amount of moisture conditioning and cleaning at the gin. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of harvest method, gin-moisture conditioning and cleaning levels, and mill-clean ing levels on dust levels in an experimental card room. Book Description
Excerpt from Effects of Chemical Additive X-78 on Ginning and Processing Performance and Cotton Quality Dyeing Behavior - NO differences in dyeing existed between samples with X - 78 and those without it. However, the samples from cotton gin dried to about 4-percent moisture content dyed lighter than the undried ones. The pres ence or absence Of X - 7 8 on the sample did not affect this result. Additives for Coatings

Additives for Coatings PDF Author: Johan Bieleman
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 3527613315
Category : Science
Languages : de
Pages : 390

Book Description
No doubt: A perfect coating has to look brilliant! But other properties of coatings are also most important. Coatings have to be durable, tough and easily applicable. Additives are the key to success in achieving these characteristics, even though the amounts used in coating formulations are small. It is not trivial at all to select the best additives. In practice, many series of tests are often necessary, and the results do not explain, why a certain additive improves the quality of a coating and another one impairs the coating. This book is dedicated to developers and applicants of coatings working in research or production, and it is aimed at providing a manual for their daily work. It will answer the following questions: How do the most important groups of additives act? Which effects can be be achieved by their addition? Scientific theories are linked to practical applications. Emphasis is put on the optical aspects that are most important for the applications in practice. This book is a milestone in quality assurance in the complete field of coatings!

A Framework for Assessing Effects of the Food System

A Framework for Assessing Effects of the Food System PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 030930783X
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 340

Book Description
How we produce and consume food has a bigger impact on Americans' well-being than any other human activity. The food industry is the largest sector of our economy; food touches everything from our health to the environment, climate change, economic inequality, and the federal budget. From the earliest developments of agriculture, a major goal has been to attain sufficient foods that provide the energy and the nutrients needed for a healthy, active life. Over time, food production, processing, marketing, and consumption have evolved and become highly complex. The challenges of improving the food system in the 21st century will require systemic approaches that take full account of social, economic, ecological, and evolutionary factors. Policy or business interventions involving a segment of the food system often have consequences beyond the original issue the intervention was meant to address. A Framework for Assessing Effects of the Food System develops an analytical framework for assessing effects associated with the ways in which food is grown, processed, distributed, marketed, retailed, and consumed in the United States. The framework will allow users to recognize effects across the full food system, consider all domains and dimensions of effects, account for systems dynamics and complexities, and choose appropriate methods for analysis. This report provides example applications of the framework based on complex questions that are currently under debate: consumption of a healthy and safe diet, food security, animal welfare, and preserving the environment and its resources. A Framework for Assessing Effects of the Food System describes the U.S. food system and provides a brief history of its evolution into the current system. This report identifies some of the real and potential implications of the current system in terms of its health, environmental, and socioeconomic effects along with a sense for the complexities of the system, potential metrics, and some of the data needs that are required to assess the effects. The overview of the food system and the framework described in this report will be an essential resource for decision makers, researchers, and others to examine the possible impacts of alternative policies or agricultural or food processing practices.
