Deindustrialization and Regional Economic Transformation

Deindustrialization and Regional Economic Transformation PDF Author: Lloyd Rodwin
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351594133
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 302

Book Description
Originally published in 1989. This major book deals with deindustrialization and regional economic transformation in five regions of the USA: the industrial Midwest, the South, California, New England, and the New York metropolitan region. Four perspective studies then connect these diverse experiences to intra-metropolitan spatial adjustments, growth prospects for industry and services, and evolving regional theory and policy. An overview chapter sums up the main themes, common denominators and differences and some puzzles and unresolved issues. All concerned with the industrial and regional evolution of the USA – geographers, economists, planners, policy-makers, will find this authoritative survey useful.

Knowledge and Industrial Organization

Knowledge and Industrial Organization PDF Author: Ake E. Andersson
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642955975
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 300

Book Description
This volume contains a selection of papers presented at an international symposium on research and development, industrial change and economic policy organized and hosted by the University of Karlstad, Viinnland, Sweden. Situated about halfway between Stockholm and Oslo, Karlstad stands on the River Klara, which reaches north into the mountains of Norway. Founded by King Charles IX of Sweden, whose statue stands in the city centre beside the river, the city celebrated its 400th anniversary in 1984. For many decades the wealth of Karlstad has been based on traditional industries such as iron, timber and paper, and throughout the province of Viinnland there are a considerable number of industrial communities which grew up around mines, ironworks, sawmills and papermills. Even the cultural structure of these communities is heavily marked by the industrial environment in which they developed. However, for over a decade now a major structural reorientation has been taking place and the old industrial structures have been disappearing. For various reasons the importance of large scale, manufacturing companies has declined and as a result of intense development work with new ideas, new entrepreneurs and new technology, we have seen the rapid rise of small companies. In this context, recent research has shown that universities playing an increasingly central role in regional development. Thus the continued development of the University of Karlstad is of significant regional and national interest. Although fairly small in an international perspective (approximately 4000 students) the university is expanding rapidly.

US Labor in Trouble and Transition

US Labor in Trouble and Transition PDF Author: Kim Moody
Publisher: Verso Books
ISBN: 1789603374
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 282

Book Description
US Labor in Trouble and Transition tells the story of union decline in America and of the split in the labor movement it led to, following the dismal tale of union mergers and management partnerships that accompanied the retreat from militancy since the 1980s. Looking to the future, Moody shows how the rise of immigrant labor and its efforts at self-organization can re-energize the unions from below. US Labor in Trouble and Transition is a major intervention in the ongoing debate within the US labor movement.
