Book Description
Abstract (Partial): In this dissertation, we first present the results of measurement and modeling of UWB TOA-based ranging in different indoor multipath environments. We provide detailed characterization of the spatial behavior of ranging, where we focus on the statistics of the ranging error in the presence and absence of the DP and evaluate the pathloss behavior in the former case which is important for indoor geolocation coverage characterization. Parameters of the ranging error probability distributions and pathloss models are provided for different environments: traditional office, modern office, residential and manufacturing floor; and different ranging scenarios: indoor-to-indoor (ITI), outdoor-to-indoor (OTI) and roof-to-indoor (RTI). Based on the developed empirical models of UWB TOA-based OTI and ITI ranging, we derive and analyze cooperative localization bounds for WSNs in the different indoor multipath environments. First, we highlight the need for cooperative localization in indoor applications. Then we provide comprehensive analysis of the factors affecting localization accuracy such as network and ranging model parameters. Finally we introduce a novel distributed cooperative localization algorithm for indoor WSNs. The Cooperative LOcalization with Quality of estimation (CLOQ) algorithm integrates and disseminates the quality of the TOA ranging and position information in order to improve the localization performance for the entire WSN. The algorithm has the ability to reduce the effects of the cluttered indoor environments by identifying and mitigating the associated ranging errors. In addition the information regarding the integrity of the position estimate is further incorporated in the iterative distributed localization process which further reduces error escalation in the network. The simulation results of CLOQ algorithm are then compared against the derived G-CRLB, which shows substantial improvements in the localization performance.

Book Description
Location-aware technologies have the potential to revolutionize computing, cellular services, sensor networks, and many other commercial, military, and social applications. In wireless networks, accurate information about an agent's location can give meaning to observed data and facilitate the agent's interactions with its surroundings and neighbors. Determining the location of one or more agents, known as localization or positioning, is a fundamental challenge. Most existing localization methods rely on existing infrastructure and hence lack the flexibility and robustness necessary for large ad-hoc networks. In this thesis, we describe a framework for localization that overcomes these limitations by utilizing cooperation: the agents in the network work together to determine their individual locations. We derive a practical algorithm for cooperative localization by formulating the problem as a factor graph and applying the sum-product algorithm. Each agent uses relative positioning measurements and probabilistic location information from its neighbors to iteratively update its location estimate. We investigate the performance of this algorithm in a network of ultra-wideband (UWB) nodes, which are well-suited for localization due to their potential to measure inter-node distances with high accuracy. Realistic models of UWB ranging error, based on an extensive measurement campaign in several indoor environments, are incorporated into the localization algorithm. Using the experimental data and simulations, we quantify the benefits that cooperation brings to localization.

Cooperative Localization Algorithms in Ultra-wideband Systems for Indoor Positioning

Cooperative Localization Algorithms in Ultra-wideband Systems for Indoor Positioning PDF Author: Ferran Pedrera Rubio

Book Description
[ANGLÈS] Indoor positioning has become an important research field in recent years. This is due to the potential services or products that can be offered, which would be very useful for users in several applications, and the interesting commercialization possibilities. But nowadays the most developed positioning systems are used outdoors, and for example GNSSs do not provide indoor coverage, so the efforts are focused on other local radio technologies. In particular, ultra-wideband is the object of this thesis. In this thesis a set of cooperative algorithms are presented and intended for use in the localization phase of an ultra-wideband positioning system. Different approaches and points of view are shown in the literature related to the localization problem. Here there is a revision of the main concepts as well as some software implementations and their results in MATLAB, always trying to evaluate which is the best option in each situation. The Ultra-Wideband system considered in this thesis consists of a set of nodes, some of which have unknown positions that have to be estimated by the algorithms. These nodes have the ability of calculating distances between each other by measuring the round-triptime of ultra-wideband pulse signals. The distances are used as inputs to the algorithms to calculate the estimated positions of the nodes as outputs. The most remarkable detail is the cooperation, which means that the distances between any pair of nodes is used even when both have unknown positions, taking advantage of that information. The results show that using the cooperation, the algorithms can be very precise even in very demanding conditions when nodes can not communicate with the whole network due to a range limitation of the technology or physical obstacles. Therefore, cooperative algorithms represent a way to further investigate and improve the solutions for indoor positioning.

Book Description
Precise and accurate localization is one of the fundamental scientific and engineering technologies needed for the applications enabling the emergence of the Smart World and the Internet of Things (IoT). Popularity of localization technology began when the GPS became open for commercial applications in early 1990's. Since most commercial localization applications are for indoors and GPS does not work indoors, the discovery of opportunistic indoor geolocation technologies began in mid-1990's. Because of complexity and diversity of science and technology involved in indoor Geolocation, this area has emerged as its own discipline over the past two decades. At the time of this writing, received signal strength (RSS) based Wi-Fi localization is dominating the commercial market complementing cell tower localization and GPS technologies using the time of arrival (TOA) technology. Wi-Fi localization technology takes advantage of the random deployment of Wi-Fi devices worldwide to support indoor and urban area localization for hundreds of thousands of applications on smart devices. Public safety and military applications demand more precise localization for first responders and military applications deploy specialized infrastructure for more precise indoor geolocation. To enhance the performance both industries are examining hybrid localization techniques. Hybrid algorithms use a variety of sensors to measure the speed and direction of movement and integrate them with the absolute radio frequency localization. Indoor Geolocation Science and Technology is a multidisciplinary book that presents the fundamentals of opportunistic localization and navigation science and technology used in different platforms such as: smart devices, unmanned ground and flying vehicles, and existing cars operating as a part of intelligent transportation systems. Material presented in the book are beneficial for the Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or other disciplines who are interested in integration of navigation into their multi-disciplinary projects. The book provides examples with supporting MATLAB codes and hands-on projects throughout to improve the ability of the readers to understand and implement variety of algorithms. It can be used for both academic education, as a textbook with problem sets and projects, and the industrial training, as a practical reference book for professionals involved in design and performance evaluation. The author of this book has pioneering research experience and industrial exposure in design and performance evaluation of indoor geolocation based on empirical measurement and modeling of the behavior of the radio propagation in indoor areas and inside the human body. The presentation of the material is based on examples of research and development that his students have performed in his laboratory, his teaching experiences as a professor, and his experiences as a technical consultant to successful startup companies.
