A report released in 2003 by the Forest Practices Board noted that the former habitat conservation regime for marbled murrelet that was implemented under the Forest Practices Code of British Columbia Act was not working well. Specifically, habitat conservation had been limited & encumbered by a slow, ineffective assessment process, and forest practices in marbled murrelet nesting habitats continued to be approved, rapidly eliminating options for habitat conservation. This special report reassesses whether marbled murrelet nesting habitat conservation has become more effective since the 2003 report. It reviews the forest practices regime for marbled murrelet habitat conservation under the Forest & Range Practices Act; examines several government initiatives that make up the tools intended to deal with marbled murrelet habitat requirements in the province, including the Protected Areas Strategy and the Identified Wildlife Management Strategy; and makes recommendations regarding marbled murrelet habitat conservation.
