Book Description
Two searing, incisive plays from Jon Robin Baitz, Tony Award nominee and two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist. Allie Murchow, a retired Hollywood makeup artist, is stuck inside her apartment, stuck in her daydreams of bygone celebrity and glamour, and stuck on hold with her pharmacist. She tries to make sense of the Los Angeles outside her windows, the LA of 2020, but she can’t hear herself think over the echo of sirens and her chatty brother’s interjections. I’ll Be Seein’ Ya, written by Jon Robin Baitz, the author of Other Desert Cities and Vicuña, is an unflinchingly funny new play that takes on our anxieties and delusions and reveals new truths about our strange reality. In The Insolvencies, two men—one younger, one older, one a professor, one a former student—recall their relationship and the time they felt “the piercing sting of simply being seen.” A study of sex and pleasure, of justice and shame, this short, stirring play completes the affecting pair of new works from Baitz, “the American theatre’s most fascinating playwright of conscience” (Michael Kuchwara, Associated Press).

Holding On
Author: Lori H. Riddle
Publisher: Verity Publishing
ISBN: 0934364982
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 797
Book Description
Take a journey to Spring Canyon, Utah, a rural community full of friends and neighbors who love and help each other, even though they come from different cultural backgrounds and religions. Each day they face the prospect of losing a loved one to an unforeseen disaster, when a husband or son is mercilessly torn from a family. Yet they continue to struggle on, trying to improve their lives in spite of the hardships they face. Nels Henningson confronts this battle every day, trying to hold on to his family in spite of the severe stomach ulcers that wrench him with pain. When conflict arises in his brother’s family, the stress on his already-fragile stomach nearly takes his life. When two workers’ unions begin recruiting some of the people in the town, Nels is undecided as to which course he should pursue, especially since one of the unions appears to have ties to the communists. As a contentious spirit begins to divide friend against friend, the turmoil threatens to destroy their peaceful community. How will the Henningson children be affected by this turmoil as their friends are removed from their lives? Will Clara Belle be able to rise above the depression and darkness that has engulfed her for so many years? Is Grant’s and Joseph’s “harmless” prank going to be discovered and put them in jail? Is Rose Marie’s secret life going to tear her from the family? And what will happen to sweet Hanna who hovers near death from an epidemic illness? Through it all, the Henningsons and their friends will strive to find peace by Holding On to their faith and those things that matter the most. Readers have said: “From the opening page of Holding On I felt like I was traveling back in time and into the hearts and minds of the Henningson family. I especially enjoyed the depth and richness of the characters in the book. The dialogue is true-to-life, and I felt a true sense of what it was like to live in Spring Canyon. This is a part of Utah’s history that most people are probably not aware of. There has obviously been an incredible amount of research that went into a book like this, and the blending of history with an intriguing storyline made for a very satisfying read. Holding On is a beautifully written novel, and it stayed with me long after I put it down. I loved this book!” “This novel deeply touched me. I was moved to tears several times when I saw the joy that the characters experienced, in spite of the struggles they were enduring. The storyline was very captivating—it was hard to stop reading—with vivid characters that seemed as real as someone you would meet in real life in Spring Canyon. I also enjoyed the many important life lessons that were woven into the story, helping me in various trials and struggles that I face in my own life. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I’m glad I had the opportunity to read it.” “Lori Riddle captures well the flavor and spirit of the poignant struggles and joys of life in Spring Canyon. Her natural and effective dialogue brings her characters to life. This is a good read. I recommend it!” “Holding On is a compelling story of drama, tribulation, camaraderie and romance all rolled into one. I found myself literally absorbed into the Spring Canyon community as I connected with the characters and their difficult circumstances. This is truly a story you can curl up by the fire and enjoy!”

Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 209
Book Description
Geepers, I Love You by Sally Gladden is an original two-act play. While rummaging through trunks in the attic, Sally finds love letters that her dadParker Gladden (a.k.a Park), a lonely Fayetteville, New York, barberhad written to his lady, Marie Hamilton, while she was away in nursing school in Brooklyn, New York. The time is 193233, the Great Depression, when jobs were few, haircuts were twenty-five cents, marathon dancers gleaned attention, and all hoped that Roosevelt would save the country. The primary scene is Park Gladdens barber shop in Fayetteville, New York. Parker writes his long letters to Marie while he awaits customers. Unfortunately, it is starve the barber time for many in the village of Fayetteville. The economy is horrid for all. Parker would have preferred to be a musician, but his family needed his income as a barber. He is lonely; he drinks excessively; he tries to remain humorous amidst the stresses of the time. Voice-overs of Parker reading these letters to Marie serve as segues between scenes. These letters are insightful, funny, tragic, and all-telling about being the Barber of Funnyville during the Depression. Colorful people come to Parks barbershop and conversations give us insight about the people and the effects of the Depression on all. These customers, from the very young to the old-timers, share the newspaper news, happenings of the small village, gossip, and in general, conversations about life! A secondary scene is the nurses station in Brooklyn, where Marie is seen reading many of Parks letters. She is also dealing with her nurse supervisor, Nurse Katrina (the wicked, the dictator). In this two-act play, to while away the hours, Park listens to the radio, composes music, practices his trombone and writes letters to his Nurtz while he awaits customers. Prior to Act I, and during the intermission, the audience sees projections of the Depression Era and hears music of that era. The play is happy, sad, and informative, and the characters are real. The playwright interviewed many citizens who endured the Depression locally. The characters are based on real people. Geepers, I Love You!

Sweet Cherry Ray
Author: Marcia Lynn McClure
Publisher: Distractions Ink
ISBN: 0983525064
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 117
Book Description
Black Jack Haley and his band of outlaws spent a lot of time in the town of Blue Water. Drinking, gambling and keeping company with saloon girls, even the fact that retired Texas Ranger Arthur Ray lived nearby did nothing to discourage Black Jack and his boys from spending their time and stolen money in the small western town. Still, though the outlaws never harmed any of Blue Water's citizens, Arthur Ray knew men like Black Jack could turn on a dime. An outlaw was an outlaw and not to be trusted. Thus, the once Texas Ranger protected his family as best he could-demanding that his daughter, Cherry, dress as a man and remain as inconspicuous as possible. Though Cherry secretly longed for the feminine attire the other young ladies in Blue Water enjoyed, she understood her father's concerns-and loved him all the more for it. And so, life was fairly uneventful for the people of Blue Water, including Cherry Ray-until the day when a stranger rode into town. Handsome and intimidating, the stranger kept his business to himself. Yet, by the look of the gun at his hip, folks began to wonder if another outlaw had arrived in Blue Water. But that didn't keep Cherry Ray and her curious nature from crossing the stranger's path one too many times...
