Book Description
Proceedings of the 22nd Course of the International School of Quantum Electronics, held 27 November-2 December 1997, in Erice, Italy. In recent years, fiber optical sensors and optical microsystems have assumed a significant role in sensing and measurement of many kinds. These optical techniques are utilised in a wide range of fields, including biomedicine, environmental sensing, mechanical and industrial measurement, and art preservation. This volume, an up-to-date survey of optical sensors and optical microsystems, aims at combining a tutorial foundation with analysis of current research in this area, and an extensive coverage of both technology and applications.

Integrated Optics, Microstructures, and Sensors

Book Description
Controlling the mechanical, electrical, magnetic, and optical properties of materials by advanced fabrication methods (Le. ; Molecular Beam Epitaxy and Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition) has become the new paradigm in our research era. Sensors, being the most vital part of the electronic data processing and decision making machines, stand to gain the most from engineering of the properties of materials. Microfabrication technology has already contributed significantly to the batch fabrication of micro-sensors with higher over all qualities compared to their counterparts that are fabricated using other methods. Batch fabrication of micro-sensors i) results in more uniform properties of co-fabricated devices, ii) nearly eliminates the need for characterization of individual sensors, and iii) eliminates a need for laborious alignment procedures. A less obvious benefit of using microfabrication methods is the possibility of precise control over the dimensions of the sensor. This control enables engineering of some of the properties of the material which affect the sensor's operation. There are many examples of this in the literature. Optical sensors are known to have superior properties over their counterparts that use other (i. e. ; electrostatic and magnetic) means of detection. To name a few, these advantages are: i) immunity to electromagnetic interferences, ii) higher sensitivities compared to the other types of sensors, iii) simplicity of operation principles, and iv) simplicity of overall construction.

Expanding the Vision of Sensor Materials

Expanding the Vision of Sensor Materials PDF Author: Committee on New Sensor Technologies: Materials and Applications
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309587433
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 146

Book Description
Advances in materials science and engineering have paved the way for the development of new and more capable sensors. Drawing upon case studies from manufacturing and structural monitoring and involving chemical and long wave-length infrared sensors, this book suggests an approach that frames the relevant technical issues in such a way as to expedite the consideration of new and novel sensor materials. It enables a multidisciplinary approach for identifying opportunities and making realistic assessments of technical risk and could be used to guide relevant research and development in sensor technologies.

Fiber Optic Sensors

Fiber Optic Sensors PDF Author: Eric Udd
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119678862
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 628

Book Description
FIBER OPTIC SENSORS Discover the latest in fiber optic sensors and their applications in this new edition Fiber-optic sensors are a powerful class of sensor that uses high-bandwidth optical fibers to convey a large amount of measured information through a single fiber. The advantages of such a mode of measurement are clear: they are intrinsically safe in explosive environments (no sparks), lightweight, compact, robust, and potentially inexpensive. As a result, their uses are manifold for a wide range of physical and chemical phenomena including temperature, strain, pressure, acoustic fields, position, velocity, rotation, acceleration, electrical current, liquid level, biochemical composition, and chemical concentration. Fiber Optic Sensors introduces and familiarizes the reader with a broad range of fiber optic sensor techniques and applications. The latest edition of this popular text builds upon the sound introductions to the fundamentals of the topic provided by earlier editions by introducing the latest technologies that have been developed in recent years. Gathering the latest research and publications on the subject in one place, the book provides a comprehensive look at fiber optic sensors with an eye to what’s new in the field. Readers of Fiber Optic Sensors’ third edition will also find: An exploration of the technology within new applications in areas such as aerospace, defense, oil and gas, medical, electric power, manufacturing, environmental, and robotics Updated chapters on the emergency of interferometric sensors, distributed sensing, and critical components A new and fully-updated comprehensive index Fiber Optic Sensors is a useful reference for engineers, scientists, technical managers, as well as advanced undergraduate and graduate students.

Automatic Control in Aerospace 1992 PDF Author: D.B. DeBra
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483298744
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 573

Book Description
Space vehicles have become increasingly complex in recent years, and the number of missions has multiplied as a result of extending frontiers in the exploration of our planetary system and the universe beyond. The advancement of automatic control in aerospace reflects these developments. Key areas covered in these proceedings include: the size and complexity of spacecrafts and the increasingly stringent performance requirements to be fulfilled in a harsh and unpredictable environment; the merger of space vehicles and airplanes into space planes to launch and retrieve payloads by reusable winged vehicles; and the demand to increase space automation and autonomy to reduce human involvement as much as possible in manned, man-tended and unmanned missions. This volume covers not only the newly evolving key technologies but also the classical issues of guidance, navigation and control.
