The 10,000 Year Explosion

The 10,000 Year Explosion PDF Author: Gregory Cochran
Publisher: Hachette UK
ISBN: 0786727500
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 304

Book Description
Resistance to malaria. Blue eyes. Lactose tolerance. What do all of these traits have in common? Every one of them has emerged in the last 10,000 years. Scientists have long believed that the "great leap forward" that occurred some 40,000 to 50,000 years ago in Europe marked end of significant biological evolution in humans. In this stunningly original account of our evolutionary history, top scholars Gregory Cochran and Henry Harpending reject this conventional wisdom and reveal that the human species has undergone a storm of genetic change much more recently. Human evolution in fact accelerated after civilization arose, they contend, and these ongoing changes have played a pivotal role in human history. They argue that biology explains the expansion of the Indo-Europeans, the European conquest of the Americas, and European Jews' rise to intellectual prominence. In each of these cases, the key was recent genetic change: adult milk tolerance in the early Indo-Europeans that allowed for a new way of life, increased disease resistance among the Europeans settling America, and new versions of neurological genes among European Jews. Ranging across subjects as diverse as human domestication, Neanderthal hybridization, and IQ tests, Cochran and Harpending's analysis demonstrates convincingly that human genetics have changed and can continue to change much more rapidly than scientists have previously believed. A provocative and fascinating new look at human evolution that turns conventional wisdom on its head, The 10,000 Year Explosion reveals the ongoing interplay between culture and biology in the making of the human race.

I was born Mother of Saint

I was born Mother of Saint PDF Author: Laerte do Cachoeira
Publisher: Laerte de Holanda Sales Filho
ISBN: 6500135687
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 420

Book Description
This is the English version of the original in Portuguese (2017): “Nasci Mãe de Santo - A maravilhosa história da Yalorixá Mãe Senhora de Umbanda, Sacerdotisa de Z A M B Y” (ISBN 978-85-924121-0-4). The book is a tribute to Mãe Senhora de Umbanda, in her extremely rare condition as Yalorixá Priestess of Z A M B Y, Consecrated by the Most High, Daughter of Ogum Quebramar and Yansã Guaracyara, Leaders Orixás of the Tenda de Umbanda Morada dos Orixás. It describes her beautiful trajectory in Umbanda in this reincarnation (1930-2015), preceded that was by her Consecration by the HIGHEST - hence the title “I was born Mother of Saint”, with emphasis on her total adoration to the CREATOR, as the faithful and discreet servant, and her greater mission, given by Our Father OXALÁ - and fulfilled with praise, to carry the Love of Our Lord JESUS to the depths of the Abyss. Preliminarily to this description, covered in Part II of the book, it is made a contextualization in relation to Umbanda, as detailed in Part I, in which is given emphasis to the Meaning, Origin and Organization of UMBANDA, including related themes, such as religious syncretism, evolution of spirits, Umbral and Quimbanda. The gestation of the book dates back to the 1980s, when the author, Laerte do Cachoeira, was honored by Yansã Guaracyara with the mission of one day writing it, as Yobá of Yansã ('The Eyes of Yansã'). Throughout this period, records were made of guidelines and revelations made by the Orixás and the People of Exu when incorporated in Mãe Senhora de Umbanda during the giras (sessions) in the Terreiro, as well as testimonies made by Mãe Senhora, in addition to recordings in audios and videos, which were compiled and organized after her passage. The records that were selected and included in the book are duly referenced, either in the body of the text or in footnotes. Everything else in the book, although it expresses the author's own thought, it is his conviction that mirrors all guidance and help received from the Orixás and the Exu People, under the command of Ogum Quebramar and Yansã Guaracyara, for the elaboration of this tribute from the Tenda de Umbanda Morada dos Orixás to its Beloved Yalorixá. It is important to note that, in line with the Statutes of the Tenda de Umbanda Morada dos Orixás, this book will not be sold, either in part or in whole. To this end, the book, including all attachments, with photos, audios and videos, is being freely available on the internet (for unrestricted public access) at https://msumbanda.blogspot.com.br/ . However, it is requested that eventual quotes are properly referenced. Laerte do Cachoeira Yobá of Yansã December 4th, 2020

The Invisible Sex

The Invisible Sex PDF Author: J. M. Adovasio
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 131541807X
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 229

Book Description
Shaped by cartoons and museum dioramas, our vision of Paleolithic times tends to feature fur-clad male hunters fearlessly attacking mammoths while timid women hover fearfully behind a boulder. Recent archaeological research has shown that this vision bears little relation to reality. J. M. Adovasio and Olga Soffer, two of the world's leading experts on perishable artifacts such as basketry, cordage, and weaving, present an exciting new look at prehistory. With science writer Jake Page, they argue that women invented all kinds of critical materials, including the clothing necessary for life in colder climates, the ropes used to make rafts that enabled long-distance travel by water, and nets used for communal hunting. Even more important, women played a central role in the development of language and social life—in short, in our becoming human. In this eye-opening book, a new story about women in prehistory emerges with provocative implications for our assumptions about gender today.

Born to Walk

Born to Walk PDF Author: Dan Rubinstein
Publisher: ECW Press
ISBN: 1770906983
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 325

Book Description
The case for getting back on our feet The humble act of putting one foot in front of the other transcends age, geography, culture, and class, and is one of the most economical and environmentally responsible modes of transit. Yet with our modern fixation on speed, this healthy pedestrian activity has been largely left behind. At a personal and professional crossroads, writer, editor, and obsessive walker Dan Rubinstein travelled throughout the U.S., U.K., and Canada to walk with people who saw the act not only as a form of transportation and recreation, but also as a path to a better world. There are no magic-bullet solutions to modern epidemics like obesity, anxiety, alienation, and climate change. But what if there is a simple way to take a step in the right direction? Combining fascinating reportage, eye-opening research, and Rubinstein’s own discoveries, Born to Walk explores how far this ancient habit can take us, how much repair is within range, and guarantees that you’ll never again take walking for granted.

A Nation So Conceived

A Nation So Conceived PDF Author: Michael P. Zuckert
Publisher: University Press of Kansas
ISBN: 0700633928
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 416

Book Description
The culmination of years of work on Abraham Lincoln’s political thought, Michael P. Zuckert’s A Nation So Conceived argues for a coherent center to Lincoln’s political ideology, a core idea that unifies his thought and thus illuminates his deeds as a political actor. That core idea is captured in the term “democratic sovereignty.” Zuckert provides invaluable guidance to understanding both Lincoln and the politics of the United States between 185 and Lincoln’s death in 1865 by focusing on roughly a dozen speeches that Lincoln made during his career. This reader-friendly chronological organization is motivated by Zuckert’s emphasis on Lincoln as a practical politician who was always fully aware of the political context of the moment within which he was speaking. According to Lincoln’s speech at Gettysburg, America was new precisely because it was born in dedication to the first premise of the theory of democratic sovereignty: that all men are created equal. Lincoln’s thought consisted in an ever-deepening meditation on the grounds and implications of that proposition, both in its constructive and in its destructive potential. The goodness of the American regime is derived from that ground and the chief dangers to the regime emanate from the same soil. Covering all significant speeches and writings of Lincoln both in his pre-presidential and presidential days, A Nation So Conceived is devoted to exploring the paradoxical duality of “created equal.” In a nearly comprehensive study of Lincoln’s thought, Zuckert uses lessons he learned from decades of teaching to reveal how Lincoln understood both its truth and its pathological consequences while offering an assessment of his aims and achievements as a statesman.
