Experimental Animals

Experimental Animals PDF Author: Thalia Field
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780986235535
Category : Animal experimentation
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Fiction. Stemming from a through-line of marital discord in the household of the great French vivisector, Claude Bernard, Thalia Field has discovered a number of voices, some famous, some forgotten, and allowed them all a moment in which to be heard again. This compelling tale is made up largely of excerpts and quotations, pieced together with great artistry. A beautiful and thought-provoking collage of a tale of rescued history and a sobering tribute to some of its victims. --Karen Joy Fowler Advancing what she started twenty years ago with her earliest explorations of essayistic fiction, Thalia Field has now composed what very well might be her life's work--a tragic, comical, and utterly fascinating tale of a marriage that vividly encapsulates not only the origins of experimental medicine, but an entire age that spirited experiments in literature, science, engineering, film, etc. It's nothing less than a history--gorgeously fictional, purposefully essayistic--of how we got where we are. --John D'Agata

The Stranger, the Tears, the Photograph, the Touch

The Stranger, the Tears, the Photograph, the Touch PDF Author: William A. Christian Jr.
Publisher: Central European University Press
ISBN: 6155225419
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 310

Book Description
This book is an expanded, larger-format, and more highly illustrated version of a smaller book released by CEU Press in 2011. It presents and comments on an extensive set of religious and personal photographs and illustrations that depict people along with divine beings or absent loved ones. First, Christian examines the periodic appearances of Christ-like strangers in the Spanish countryside through the vision of a woman in La Mancha in 1931. Then he considers the long history of images with liquids on them not only for early modern Spain, but also in the United States, Italy and France in the 1940s and 1950s. The third and most extensive chapter addresses the iconography of illustrated depictions of divine and spirit beings in conjunction with humans and how its conventions were incorporated into commercial postcards and personal photographs, culminating in photo montages of families and their absent soldiers in World War I. The fourth theme is new to this edition. It compares the electric moments in Spanish communities when people ritually come into physical contact with saints and with animals, or transform themselves into saints or animals for ritual purposes. Over 50 of the color photographs by Spain's preeminent documentary photographer, Cristina GarcĂa Rodero, are included.

The Human Rights Culture

The Human Rights Culture PDF Author: Lawrence Meir Friedman
Publisher: Quid Pro Books
ISBN: 1610270738
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 239

Book Description
Lawrence M. Friedman's newest book explores the sheer phenomenon of a near-global arc favoring the idea, and sometimes even the practice, of human rights. Not the usual legal or philosophical examination of rights, this book instead asks: Why is it--as a social and historical matter--that rights discourse is so prevalent and compelling to the current world?"Reams of books and articles have been written about human rights, but THE HUMAN RIGHTS CULTURE is unique. It is the first comprehensive, sociological study of human rights in the contemporary period. With his characteristic erudition and graceful style, Lawrence Friedman addresses all the central topics: women's rights, minority rights, privacy, social rights, cultural rights, the role of courts, whether human rights are universal, and much more. This surprisingly compact book presents a balanced discussion of each issue, filled with fascinating details and examples. Friedman's core argument is that the recent rise of human rights discourse around the globe is the product of modernity--in particular the spread of the cultural belief that people are unique individuals entitled to respect and the opportunity to flourish. This terrific book will be informative not only to human rights experts and practitioners but also to people who wish to read a clear and sophisticated introduction to the field." -- Brian Z. Tamanaha, Professor of Law, Washington UniversityQuality ebook formatting from Quid Pro Books features active Contents, linked footnotes, linked textual cross-references, and active URLs in references. Professor Friedman's latest book joins Quid Pro's Contemporary Society Series.
