White Hunters

White Hunters PDF Author: Brian Herne
Publisher: Holt Paperbacks
ISBN: 146686754X
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 481

Book Description
Brian Herne's White Hunters: The Golden Age of African Safaris is the story of seventy years of African adventure, danger, and romance. East Africa affects our imagination like few other places: the sight of a charging rhino goes directly to the heart; the limitless landscape of bony highlands, desert, and mountain is, as Isak Dinesen wrote, of "unequalled nobility." White Hunters re-creates the legendary big-game safaris led by Selous and Bell and the daring ventures of early hunters into unexplored territories, and brings to life such romantic figures as Cape-to-Cairo Grogan, who walked 4,000 miles for the love of a woman, and Dinesen's dashing lover, Denys Finch. Witnesses to the richest wildlife spectacle on the earth, these hunters were the first conservationists. Hard-drinking, infatuated with risk, and careless in love, they inspired Hemingway's stories and movies with Clark Gable and Gregory Peck.

A Mule Deer Retrospective

A Mule Deer Retrospective PDF Author: Boone and Crockett Club
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780940864955
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Sportsmen with an eye for the good ol' days of big game hunting in North America will delight in B&C's third installment of its visually stunning Retrospective Series -- A Mule Deer Retrospective. This latest book focuses on the iconic mule deer of the West with hundreds of vintage photographs, chapters about historical mule deer hunting areas, and detailed accounts of dozens of noteworthy mule deer trophies recognized by B&C.No one can deny that the Golden Era of mule deer hunting happened decades ago with nearly 80% of the top 50 mule deer recognized by the Boone and Crockett Club being taken before 1976 -- some taken as far back as the 1800s. A Mule Deer Retrospective has a special section dedicated to these historic bucks, which include such well-known trophies as Ed Broder's World's Record non-typical mule deer taken near Chip Lake, Alberta, in 1926, and Doug Burris's Colorado King taken in 1972, which still reigns as the World's Record typical mule deer.A Mule Deer Retrospective also features chapters about historic mule deer haunts like Arizona's Kaibab National Forest where the legendary Jack O'Connor hunted, plus an in depth look at the changing landscape of mule deer hunting destinations throughout the past century. Also of note to readers is the enormous quantity of non-typical bucks compared to typical deer. Amazingly, in the early days of records-keeping only 25% of mule deer entries were typical deer--seemingly the definition of a "keeper trophy buck" changed somewhere along the way.Typically speaking, mule deer hunters are bit more fanatical about the game they pursue than most of their sportsmen brotherhood. With the vast amount of photographs, entertaining correspondence, and historical trophy data, A Mule Deer Retrospective will not disappoint even the most discerning hunter!

The Golden Years at Riverview

Pages : 246

Book Description
In my younger days a fondness for Mexico encouraged numerous travels to this wonderful place south of the border. Many pleasant memories linger of the times spent there laced with a liberal amount of unfortunate experiences The Mexican travels are related in two parts, Mexico The Early Days chapter 1 (in two parts) And another, much later, A Mexican Fiasco of the 90's chapter 2 (in three parts). Having an affinity for the North Country, We also traveled there for many years, where I made many friends and had an abundance of wonderful experiences as well as a full ration of those less than favorable as described in chapter 3 Oh! For a Northern Adventure or Northward Ho Ho! The good fortune of meeting my life long Canadian friend, hunting and fishing partner, occurred on a return trip from the Northwest Territories in the sixties and is described in the Alaska (almost) chapter 4. Moose, bird -hunting and fishing were enjoyed during the years of these Canadian ventures, many of these stories and unforgettable incidents are included in the chapter 5 A Couple Times at Little Grebe' Also numerous moose hunts and adventures are described in Lysander, Root River moose hunt, and The Mascara chapters 6,7and 8. The second attempt at Alaska was a bit more productive than the earlier ones but even it was not without some interesting drawbacks as described in the Alaska chapter 9. After retirement to my river cabin for the last 18 or so years, I continue with many undeniably outrageous but stupidly rewarding as well as amusing activities as described in Tar Baby and Ku-Joe and the Buck, chapters 10 and 11. Las Vegas, chapter 12 relates an interesting experience on one of the many visits there.

The Hunt for the Golden Mole

The Hunt for the Golden Mole PDF Author: Richard Girling
Publisher: Random House
ISBN: 1448104734
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 322

Book Description
This story is a quest for an animal so rare that a sighting has never been recorded. The Somali golden mole was first described in 1964, but the sole evidence for its existence is a tiny fragment of jawbone found in an owl pellet. Intrigued by this elusive creature, and what it can tell us about extinction and survival, Richard Girling embarks on a hunt to find the animal and its discoverer - an Italian professor who he thinks might still be alive... Richard's journey comes at a time when one species - our own - is having to reconsider its relationship with every other. He delves into the history of exploration and cataloguing and the tall tales of the great hunters, traces the development of the conservation movement and addresses central issues of extinction and biodiversity.

Six Centuries of Foxhunting

Six Centuries of Foxhunting PDF Author: M. L. Biscotti
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 144224190X
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 529

Book Description
Hunting literature had its beginnings as early as the fourteenth century, when nobles hunted stag, bear, fox, and other game on horseback. As foxhunting grew in popularity, literary works that covered the sport flourished, as well. In Six Centuries of Foxhunting: An Annotated Bibliography, M. L. Biscotti has compiled all books produced in Great Britain and the United States that pertain to, or mention, foxhunting with hounds. Arranged alphabetically by author, more than 2000 titles are included. Each entry features details such as place and year of publication, publisher, book size, page count, illustrations, and binding. Nearly every title is also annotated with a description of the book’s contents, and biographical sketches are provided for the most notable authors. Narratives, histories, illustrated works, verse, fiction, and even anti-hunting literature all have their place in this volume. Six Centuries of Foxhunting also features more than thirty images of book covers and foxhunting illustrations. With appendixes that contain author, title, and illustrator time lines, and separate author and title indexes, this comprehensive bibliography is a valuable resource for researchers, book dealers and collectors, and foxhunters.
