Book Description
Excerpt from A d104-Book of Human Physiology To set fixed limits to the subject matter of physiology is a very difficult task, because, properly conceived, large portions of the entire group of medical and biological sciences belong to its province. A text-book designed primarily for medical students can, however, regard the field as somewhat more restricted; for the prospective physician has abundant opportunity to amplify his knowledge of the bodily functions from his other studies. Hence in this book I have followed the usual custom and have brought together only so much of our information respecting the human body as can be described as pertaining to its normal functions. The discoveries made in the realms of practical medicine, of experimental pathology and of pharmacology, which in many respects are so full of significance for the processes of the body, are, therefore, for the most part passed by. In like manner the facts of comparative physiology have been alluded to only in exceptional cases, since an exhaustive discussion of them would have increased the size of the book to a not inconsiderable extent. For the same reason I have been unable to find a place for the short histological discussion customary in text-books. I do not regard this as an error, for a necessarily brief and superficial resume of the most important histological facts could be of no great service, since the student needs a more extensive knowledge of the finer structure of the body and must in any case obtain this from the text-books devoted especially to that subject. I do not therefore at all mistake the great importance of histology for physiology; on the contrary, I would recommend that in the, study of a text-book of this science a text-book of histology (and one of anatomy) be always at hand in order to combine the physiological facts with the histological and anatomical facts. Physiological chemistry also has developed so far that more and more it can claim the right to be regarded as an independent science. On the other hand it is not possible to present the physiological facts without reference to the chemical processes of the body. Human Physiology
Author: Gillian Pocock
Publisher: Elsevier España
ISBN: 9788445814796
Category : Medical
Languages : es
Pages : 794
Book Description
The new edition of Human Physiology - an Oxford Core Text continues to meet the needs of preclinical medical students and is also of value to those following undergraduate courses in physiology and other health-related disciplines. It adopts a student-friendly style with an emphasis on clarity, explanation and understanding complemented by full-color illustrations. The book has a hierarchical organization, beginning with aspects of cell and tissue function before proceeding to a consideration of the communication systems of the body including the endocrine and nervous systems. The heart of the text concerns the physiology of the main body systems. The new edition has been significantly revised to include an expanded problem section at the end of each chapter with more quantitative examples and some clinical problems where appropriate. Each chapter has been updated and new material includes a section on the physiology of itch; more detailed treatment of colour vision, deafness and vestibular blindness; increased emphasis on neurology disorders; discussion of the physiology of respiratory failure and pulmonary embolism; a discussion of malabsorption disorders; extensive revision to cover the wider aspects of material physiology not just lactation, and extended treatment of fever. The Clinical Physiology chapter is now broken into several short chapters and includes a discussion of cardiovascular pathophysiology and organ failure.

Principles of Human Physiology
Author: William Benjamin Carpenter
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780266533429
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 938
Book Description
Excerpt from Principles of Human Physiology: With Their Chief Applications to Psychology, Pathology, Therapeutics, Hygiène, and Forensic Medicine In accordance with the foregoing plan, the Second, Third, and Fifth Chapters of the last Edition of this work, which included a summary of Animal Chemistry, and of the Structure and Actions of the Animal Tissues, amounting in all to about 240 pages, have been omitted from the present. On the other hand, additions have been made, to the amount of about 70 pages; and these by no means constitute the whole of the new matter introduced, since many portions have been rewritten, with little or no increase of bulk. It has been the Author's desire, on this as on former occasions, that his Treatise should represent his present convictions and opinions, as completely as if it were making its appear ance for the first time; and he has accordingly subjected every part of it to a revision not less careful than that which he would have bestowed upon it, had it less recently passed under a similar scrutiny. Although the minor results of this revision, which are scattered through almost every part of the volume, would not be apparent save on a searching comparison, yet he trusts that they will be found to have increased the utility of the work; those of more importance, however, he deems it well now to particularize.
