Excerpt from Hookworm Infection in Foreign Countries The, commission has undertaken to get information on hookworm disease in foreign countries. A letter was pre pared asking for information on: 1, whether or not the country has been found infected; 2, the geographic distri bution of the infection within the country; 3, an approxi mate estimate of the degree of infection; 4, whether the infection is surface or mine infection; 5, what is being done by private or public agencies to eradicate or relieve it. Through the good offices of the late Surgeon General Wy man this letter was sent out by the Department of State with a covering letter as an official inquiry to American representatives in all foreign countries. This was followed by correspondence with physicians and public health au thorities in these countries; these reports were supple mented by reference to the voluminous literature of the subject on file in the library of the Surgeon General's Office, U. S. Army. The information thus gained is here sum marized. The geographic distribution of the infection is exhibited on maps I to 6. The rural Brazilian lives in a small house with mud walls and a thatched or tiled roof. The oor is Of dried packed earth. The native prefers to place his house several hundred yards from his neighbors, but on the large plantations in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro the owners have grouped their laborers in collections of from 5 to 200 houses with two to four families in each house. The house is usually situated near a running stream, where the native's wife washes the clothes and from which She brings all the water necessary for household use, including the drinking water. This stream is always polluted. The chief articles of diet Of the rural Brazilian are beans, greens, mandioca, and coffee. When occasion Offers, he eats rice, sugar, and meat, and he nearly always sprinkles dried corn or mandioca meal over all food. He also eats bananas and oranges when he can get them. Excerpt from The Rural School and Hookworm Disease Sir: Physical health for individual and country is very largely a matter of education, and instruction in the principles of health and in the means of preventing sickness should be given to children in schools of all grades, both public and private. Without some gen eral understanding of the causes of diseases, and the means of pre venting them, there can never be in any community, large or small, such hearty, persistent, and intelligent cooperation as is necessary to guard the public health. In the Southern States one of the most common forms of disease, especially among children, is hookworm dis ease. The campaign for its eradication conducted by the Rocke feller Sanitary Commission for the Eradication of Hookworm Dis case is one Of the most remarkable health campaigns ever waged in this country. It has shown conclusively the important part which the schools may bear in any campaign against this and other com municable diseases, especially against the soil and water pollution diseases. For this reason I have asked Dr. John A. Ferrell, M. D., assistant director general of the International Health Commission, who has had an important part in the campaign against hookworm in the South, to prepare the manuscript transmitted herewith. I recommend that the manuscript be published under the title The rural school and hookworm disease, and that it be distributed among school officers and teachers in the States and Territories and posses sions of the United States in which this disease is most prevalent. Excerpt from Hookworm Disease: Etiology, Pathology, Diagnosis, Prognosis, Prophylaxis Few diseases surpass the subject of this work in the strangeness of its history, the importance of its ravages, or the theoretic ease of its extinction. It probably existed from remote antiquity among trop ical peoples, and, although attempts have been made to trace it back to a very early period, these efforts fail for lack of the careful clinical methods of diagnosis that are necessary for the recognition of such diseases. For almost fifty years after the disease was made known in Italy, and after it had been the subject of many important investiga tions in diagnosis, biology, and treatment, it remained for us in America chiefly an interesting, but remote, fact, de void of practical relations. Its absence was accepted as evidence of the greater personal cleanliness and superior mode of life of our citizens, and at most it was feared that among recent immigrants cases might be imported and even spread in less favorable localities. No more striking ex ample of the transitory state of medical knowledge can be advanced than the proof brought within the last few years, not only that hookworms exist as human parasites in a large part of the country, but that they may with reason be looked upon as among the most important causes of diseases of the South in extent, in destruction of life, and in leading to physical and mental degeneration. The fact that the parasites in the United States belong to a new species is a most important one and very suggestive in its bearing on medical zoology.
