Book Description
Homo Sum is a story of the cave-dweller called Paulus, based on the Chruch history of the Oasis of Pharan. The Pharan Oasis was the largest urban center of the Sinai Peninsula during the late Roman period. It was famous as the place of the Bishop of Sinai. German novelist Georg Ebers transports the readers to Mount Sinai with his incredible imagery in the novel. The scenes of this story, like his other works are set in Egypt during the time of the Roman emperor, Hadrian. Excerpt from Homo Sum "Rocks-naked, hard, red-brown rocks all round; not a bush, not a blade, not a clinging moss such as elsewhere nature has lightly flung on the rocky surface of the heights, as if a breath of her creative life had softly touched the barren stone. Nothing but smooth granite, and above it a sky as bare of cloud as the rocks are of shrubs and herbs."

Homo Sum (Historical Novel) PDF Author: Georg Ebers
Publisher: e-artnow

Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 195

Book Description
Homo Sum is a historical novel that features a story of early centuries of Christianity in Egypt. This carefully crafted ebook is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. "Hermas had hastened onwards without delay. He had already reached the last bend of the path he had followed down the ravine, and he saw at his feet the long narrow valley and the gleaming waters of the stream, which here fertilized the soil of the desert. He looked down on lofty palms and tamarisk shrubs innumerable, among which rose the houses of the inhabitants, surrounded by their little gardens and small carefully- irrigated fields; already he could hear the crowing of a cock and the hospitable barking of a dog, sounds which came to him like a welcome from the midst of that life for which he yearned, accustomed as he was to be surrounded day and night by the deep and lonely stillness of the rocky heights."

Reflection on the Death of a Porcupine

Reflection on the Death of a Porcupine PDF Author: D. H. Lawrence
Publisher: Rosetta Books
ISBN: 0795351526
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 408

Book Description
This collection of essays by the author of Lady Chatterley’s Loverpresents his musings on literature, politics and philosophy in a newly restored text. Though D. H. Lawrence was one of the great writers of the twentieth century, his works were severely corrupted by the stringent house-styling of printers and the intrusive editing of timid publishers. A team of scholars at Cambridge University Press has worked for more than thirty years to restore the definitive texts of D. H. Lawrence in The Cambridge Editions. Between 1915–1925, D. H. Lawrence wrote a series of “philosophicalish” essays covering topics ranging from politics to nature, and from religion to education. Varying in tone from lighthearted humor to spiritual meditation, they all share the underlying themes of Lawrence’s mature work: “Be thyself.” As far as possible, the editors of the Cambridge Editions series have restored these essays to their original form as Lawrence wrote them. A discussion of the history of each essay is provided, and several incomplete and unpublished essays are reproduced in an appendix.
