Book Description
This book was written for both hockey player and coach. Hockey has been a passion of mine since early childhood. I was born and raised in Canada and relocated to the United States in 1990. Hockey has been the fabric of our family tree. From youth hockey to having the opportunity to play at the minor professional level, I have enjoyed this great game and the life lessons it has instilled along the way. It was during my career in university where coaching became a passion. I loved the weight room, the preparation, and the process. It was, and still is, a place of solace for me—a classroom. My love for strength and conditioning was born in the sweaty confines of the Miami (OH) strength and conditioning facility located in Oxford, Ohio, and run by then strength and conditioning coach Dan Dalrymple. Coach D instilled pride, work ethic, and belief in his athletes. Our two-thousand-square foot weight room was a place of preparation, competition, and embodied the team-first spirit. At that instant, I knew my calling was to serve as a coach. I owe much gratitude and appreciation to Coach D. He was a mentor to me! Thanks, Coach, your imprint has left an indelible mark.

Breaking the Ice
Author: Angie Bullaro
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 1534425586
Category : Juvenile Nonfiction
Languages : en
Pages : 38
Book Description
The inspiring true story of Manon Rhéaume, the first and only woman to play a game in the National Hockey League, featuring an afterward from Manon herself. “One day, a woman will play in the National Hockey League. If no one prevents her,” said a twelve-year-old Manon Rhéaume. Manon always dreamed of playing hockey. So, when the team her father coached needed a goalie, five-year-old Manon begged for the chance to play. She didn’t care that she’d be the only girl in the entire league or that hockey was considered a “boys’ sport” in her hometown of Lac-Beauport, Quebec, Canada. All she cared about was the game. After her father gave her that first chance to play, she embarked on a spectacular, groundbreaking career in hockey. At every level of competition, Manon was faced with naysayers, but she continued to play, earning her place on prestigious teams and ultimately becoming the first woman to play a game in the NHL. Including an afterword written by Manon herself, Breaking the Ice is the true story of one girl’s courage, determination, and love for the sport.

Perfect for diehard hockey fans and those new to the game, Inside Hockey! has something for everyone. Readers of all ages will discover the stories behind the greatest goal scorers, crazy goalies, practical jokers and hijinks, superstitions, the most ferocious fights, players overcoming obstacles, and the obsession with that Cup called Stanley. In what other sport could you find a player who would rather fight than score, and one who used to sleep in his uniform so he wouldn't miss a second of ice time in the morning? Or a goalie who sewed an elastic mesh net (like a spider web) between his legs to catch the puck, and one who talked to the goalposts like they were his old friends? With insider information about the game and behind the scenes profiles on players and their incredible experiences, Hockey Night will never look the same way again.

Puckstruck
Author: Stephen Smith
Publisher: Greystone Books
ISBN: 177164091X
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 440
Book Description
Like many a Canadian kid, Stephen Smith was up on skates first thing as a boy, out in the weather chasing a puck and the promise of an NHL career. Back indoors after that didn’t quite work out, he turned to the bookshelf. That’s where, without entirely meaning to, he ended up reading all the hockey books. There was Crunch and Boom Boom, Slashing! and High Stick; there was Max Bentley: Hockey’s Dipsy-Doodle Dandy, Blue Line Murder, and Nagano, a Czech hockey opera. There was Blood on the Ice, Cracked Ice, Fire On Ice, Power On Ice, Cowboy On Ice, and Steel On Ice. In Puckstruck, Smith chronicles his wide-eyed and sometimes wincing wander through hockey’s literature, language, and culture, weighing its excitement and unbridled joy against its costs and vexing brutality. In exploring his own lifelong love of the game, hoping to surprise some sense out of it, he sifts hockey’s narratives in search of hockey’s heart, what it means and why it should distress us even as we celebrate its glories. On a journey to discover what the game might have to say about who we are as Canadians, he seeks to answer some of its essential riddles.

Illustrated Guide to Hockey Sites & History
Author: Steven Sandor
Publisher: Heritage House Publishing Co
ISBN: 9781894974196
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 164
Book Description
Home to Hockey Night in Canada, the Hockey Hall of Fame, Don Cherry and the storied Leafs, Toronto is indeed the centre of the hockey universe. But did you know . . . Before becoming the Maple Leafs, the franchise had several names, including the Torontos, the Arenas and the St. Pats, and the team's first games were played in the long-gone Arena Gardens. The Toronto Maple Leaf s might never have come about if the legendary hockey czar Conn Smythe hadn't been fired by the start-up New York Rangers. And why were the Rangers practicing in Toronto and not New York? Maple Leaf Gardens came into existence only after Depression-era construction workers agreed to take pay cuts and accept shares in MLG, which proved to be a boon for the workers. In addition to the incredible displays, films, exhibits and the exact replica of the fabled Montreal Canadiens dressing room, the Hockey Hall of Fame is rumoured to be haunted by a ghost. A disgruntled non-inductee? Not exactly. Steven Sandor stands on his head with this cannonading tour of Toronto's rich hockey past and present. Combining entertaining stories with contemporary and historic photographs, the Illustrated Guide to Hockey Sites & History: Torontoshoots and scores on every shift. The stories break out fast with wonderful characters and trivia spanning over a century of hockey history. Maps and directions are provided for anyone who wants to come off the bench and visit the sites. Steven also recommends a few establishments around the city where healthy scratches can enjoy a beverage and watch the game.
