Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Western Reserve, Vol. 3 Hon. James C. Johnson was the Son of Daniel and Elizabeth (crabtree) Johnson. His father and mother were natives of Allegheny county, Maryland, where they were married and resided for some years and where an elder brother and sister of the subject of this sketch were born. They came to Ohio in 1802, before Ohio had arrived at the dignity of statehood, the father driving a wagon conveying their scanty belongings and the mother traveling on horseback with the children over the moun tains of West Virginia, then still a part of the Old Dominion. It was before the days of bridges, and they forded the Ohio river, the young mother performing this feat on horse back with a child in her arms. Tradition says that she crossed the Ohio three times in this manner. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Western Pennsylvania Historical Magazine, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint)

Western Pennsylvania Historical Magazine, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Historical Society of West Pennsylvania
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781331931744
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 308

Book Description
Excerpt from Western Pennsylvania Historical Magazine, Vol. 1 It is true, the society entertains views somewhat different from those held by the editor of The Olden Time. It does not believe that the society could be a substitute for a periodical like The Olden Time, nor that this magazine could take the place of the society, but holds that the one must be the complement of the other. The society must supply the capital and the energy necessary to the conduct of the magazine, while the magazine is the instrument for the publication of the materials collected by the society. For a number of years the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania realized that it would be advantageous to conduct a magazine, but did not feel able to undertake the work. It is now prepared to answer the call, and the result is its entry into the list of publishers. It is hoped that the magazine will be a valuable instrument in the preservation, discussion, and dissemination of matters of local history, biography and belles letters. It is intended whenever possible to publish original letters, journals, records and other memoranda. Articles dealing with modern as well as the older phases of the history and development of what in early days was known as the Western country, will appear from time to time. Occasionally excerpts from publications not ordinarily accessible to the general reader, will be printed. The department of "Notes and Queries," begun in this number, is to be continued as a feature of the magazine. The editors hope for the assistance and co-operation of every member of the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania, as well as of those readers whose names do not appear on its roles. Book Description
Excerpt from Myers' History of West Virginia, Vol. 1 of 2 TO the public: There are several reasons why this book was written. Firstly - There is no single volume or set of volumes which contains an up-to - date history of \yest Virginia. Lewis' History is the nearest approach. It is a good one. And fairly supplies the purpose for which it was intended, namely: a text book for use in the public schools; but the information it contains is in such abbreviated form and omits so many subjects that are really of such historical impor tance as to emphasize the need of a book of more extensive detail and covering a wider scope of information for the use of the general reading public. Secondly - There was need of a book which would revive and help perpetuate the memory of some almost forgotten heroes and heroines who opened and made easier the way for the succeeding generations of people.
