The Founding Mothers of Mackinac Island

The Founding Mothers of Mackinac Island PDF Author: Theresa L. Weller
Publisher: MSU Press
ISBN: 1628954280
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 187

Book Description
Drawing on a wide array of historical sources, Theresa L. Weller provides a comprehensive history of the lineage of the seventy-four members of the Agatha Biddle band in 1870. A highly unusual Native and Métis community, the band included just eight men but sixty-six women. Agatha Biddle was a member of the band from its first enumeration in 1837 and became its chief in the early 1860s. Also, unlike most other bands, which were typically made up of family members, this one began as a small handful of unrelated Indian women joined by the fact that the US government owed them payments in the form of annuities in exchange for land given up in the 1836 Treaty of Washington, DC. In this volume, the author unveils the genealogies for all the families who belonged to the band under Agatha Biddle’s leadership, and in doing so, offers the reader fascinating insights into Mackinac Island life in the nineteenth century.

Nicholas Biddle in Greece

Nicholas Biddle in Greece PDF Author: R. A. McNeal
Publisher: Penn State Press
ISBN: 027104165X
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 258

Book Description
Nicholas Biddle (1786-1844) was a noted politician and financier in early nineteenth-century America. At eighteen, he went to Europe as the secretary of the American minister to France. He also made the acquaintance of James Monroe when Monroe was the American ambassador to London. He was later elected to the state legislature and senate of Pennsylvania. Ultimately he became a director and then the president of the Bank of the United States. In the course of a sojourn to Europe, Biddle sailed to Greece, then a part of the Ottoman Empire. Half of the journal he kept on the trip has only recently been discovered, and the other half is known to only a few people because it is still in private hands. Taken together, these two journals (plus the four extant letters that Biddle wrote to his family in Philadelphia) are a mine of information about the formative influences on his career, about the politics and personalities of Napoleon's Europe, about the condition of Greece and its ancient monuments under the Turkocratia, and even about the American naval war against the Barbary pirates. Despite being written by a twenty-year old, these journals are remarkable for their literary quality and their general liveliness. Perhaps because they were not written to be published, they have a freshness and honesty lacking in more formal works of travel. McNeal's extensive introduction illuminates the early nineteenth-century background of Biddle's journals.

Book Description
Excerpt from Notes on the Genealogy of the Biddle Family: Together With Abstracts of Some Early Deeds The wish to acquire as authentic and definite a knowl edge as possible of the progenitor of my paternal family and of his descendants in America, led me some years ago to begin collecting from other members of the family copies of the early Deeds in their possession. In doing this there was also gradually accumulated a good deal of information about the family genealogy; and there is so much satisfaction in knowing one's ancestors - where they settled, lived and died, and what they did, and what became of their descendants - that I have thought it worth while to put into print the prominent parts of this information, together with an abstract of the more impor tant Deeds.
