Georgia Civil War Manuscript Collections

Georgia Civil War Manuscript Collections PDF Author: David H. Slay
Publisher: University of Alabama Press
ISBN: 0817317449
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 297

Book Description
This book provides historians and genealogists with a one-stop guide to every Civil War–related manuscript collection stored in Georgia’s many repositories. With this guide in hand, researchers will no longer spend countless hours pouring through online catalogs, emailing archivists, and wondering if they have exhausted every lead in their pursuit of firsthand information about the war and the experiences of those who lived through and were impacted by it. In assembling the first state-specific bibliography to be compiled since the Indiana and Illinois bibliographies were assembled for the Civil War Centennial in the 1960s, David Slay has expanded the scope of this survey to include works relating to women, African Americans, and social history, as well as the letters and diaries of soldiers who fought in the war, reflecting society’s evolving understanding and interest in this defining period of American life. In addition, this compilation is not confined to material produced from 1861 to 1865, but also includes collections spanning the lives of prominent Civil War figures, making it an invaluable source for biographers. Organized by institution, Georgia Civil War Manuscript Collections has many time-saving features, all designed to increase efficiency of research. Each collection description contains the title and catalog number used in the holding institution. Where possible, collection descriptions have been improved upon, providing the researcher with information beyond what is listed in the holding institution’s card catalog and finding aid. It also cross-references duplicate collections that are held in two or more institutions as microfilm or photocopies. Simply put, Georgia Civil War Manuscript Collections takes the mystery out of Civil War research in Georgia.

Atlanta's Fighting Forty-Second

Atlanta's Fighting Forty-Second PDF Author: W. Clifford Roberts Jr.
Publisher: Mercer University Press
ISBN: 9780881467413
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 560

Book Description
The 42nd Georgia Volunteer Infantry was organized in the spring of 1862 at Camp McDonald near Big Shanty. The regiment was made up of companies from DeKalb, Fulton, Gwinnett, Milton, Newton, and Walton counties. Fighting in the Western Theater, they were major participants at Cumberland Gap, Champion's Hill, Vicksburg, Resaca, Atlanta, Nashville, and Bentonville. These Georgians proved to be capable fighters and were, on four occasions, assigned to cover the retreat of the Army of Tennessee. The furious charge of the 42nd Georgia that carried the Federal trenches near the Troup Hurt House was a pivotal moment in the Battle of Atlanta. Their capture of a Federal battery is depicted in the recently restored Atlanta Cyclorama painting. This detailed narrative highlights first person accounts drawn from soldier's letters, diaries, and field reports, as well as from Federal soldiers directly across the trench lines.

More Generals in Gray

More Generals in Gray PDF Author: Bruce S. Allardice
Publisher: LSU Press
ISBN: 9780807131480
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 324

Book Description
In this masterpiece of research, a splendid supplement to Ezra J. Warner's Generals in Gray, Bruce S. Allardice brings to light a neglected class of officers: the Confederacy's "other" generals -- men who attained their rank outside the usual avenue of appointment by President Jefferson Davis and who had been virtually forgotten as a consequence. Explaining that the process of becoming a general was fraught with politics, lobbying, intrigue, accident, mismanagement, and chance, Allardice identifies six main categories of legitimate claimants to the rank of Confederate General -- two more than historians have traditionally recognized. He presents a substantial biographical sketch of 137 generals not found in Warner's original and a short bibliography of each. For the vast majority, his is the first treatment ever published.

Book Description

Decades after Daniel Boone blazed the Wilderness Trail, witness how Isaac is front and center as the Confederate and Union armies skirmish for strategic supply lines required for outlying Civil War battle campaigns. Also, decipher the mitigating factors contributing to Isaac going to war with Abraham Green, a yeoman farmer and slaveholder of Isaac. This human interest–centric novel further explores the intertwined relationship between master, slave, and the dynamics leading up to a Confederate Congress proposal to enlist African-American troops in the latter part of the American Civil War. Like never before, this electrifying page turner sparks novice readers and Civil War zealots alike into debating the best-kept factual secrets concerning African-American Confederate soldiers.
