Having noticed the antiquities, we now proceed to present the reader with some of the old traditions that are still afloat in the district. Almost every place has its local traditions, either more or less interesting. These traditions are some of them found to embody a considerable share of veritable history, because in ancient times even striking and interesting incidents and general occurrences were not committed to writing. They were left to sail down the stream of time in the memories of the native inhabitants, generation after generation, with almost undeviating accuracy. Some very cautious people are inclined to regard tradition as a thing of uncertainty; but this is done without due consideration or sifting inquiry. There is far more reality in oral traditions than many are aware of, as could easily be shown by an induction of particulars. No tradition has arisen without a veritable foundation, and in its descent from age to age, it is more likely to lose than to gain, so that the real bones of the story are preserved, while in the lapse of time the more interesting portions are entirely forgotten. Another thing in favour of these traditions is, that they are generally short, and this circumstance, as Disraeli remarks, insures their correctness. At any rate, these traditionary fragments are commonly fraught with an interest pleasing to the popular, mind, and are often remarkably instructive.
