Book Description
Excerpt from A History French Revolution, Vol. 1 of 3 Fortescue, the superintendent of the reading-room, who knows the collection better than any one else. This great collection has been used especially for Chapter I. Of the present volume on the Elections, which is based entirely upon it, but in subsequent chapters the contemporary journals have formed the groundwork of the story, though corrected and amplified by these pamphlets and by modern monographs. The history of the French Revolution has gone through four distinct stages in France, which must be noticed successively, though the boundaries of the third and fourth stages cannot be distinctly defined. The first stage is that of contemporary histories. Though the various journals and pamphlets give the narrative of events at first hand, they were quickly followed up and made use of in regular histories. Of these the earliest in point of date is that of Rabant de Saint Etienne, the Protestant pastor, and member of the Constituent Assembly and of the Convention, who wrote his Histoire de la Revolution francaise in 1792, in the happy conviction that the Revolution was all over, before it had reached the critical period in which he himself died on the guillotine. Of the numerous histories published under the Directory, the best known are those of the Deux Amis and of Lacretelle, of which Carlyle made copious use. But these writers lived too close to the time of which they wrote to be able to clear their minds of prejudices or to have knowledge of the documents which could alone unravel hidden intrigues. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of the French Revolution, Vol. 3 of 5 An order of arrest was issued by the commune against the two ministers Lebrun and Clavieres, dismissed after the 2nd of June. Lebrun found means to evade it. The same measure was taken against Roland, who had been removed from office on the 21st of January, and begged in vain to be permitted to render his accounts. He escaped the search made for him by the commune, and concealed himself at Rouen. Madame Roland, against whom also proceedings were instituted, had no other anxiety than that of favouring the escape of her husband; then, committing her daughter to the care of a trusty friend, she surrendered with noble indifference to the committee of her section, and was thrown into prison with a multitude of other victims of the 31st of May. Great was the joy at the Jacobins. Its members congratulated themselves on the energy of the people, on their late admirable conduct, and on the removal of all those obstacles which the right side had not ceased to oppose to the progress of the Revolution. According to the custom after all great events, they agreed upon the manner in which the last insurrection should be represented. "The people," said Robespierre, "have confounded all their calumniators by their conduct. Eighty thousand men have been under arms for nearly a week, yet no property has been violated, not a drop of blood has been spilled, and they have thus proved whether it was their aim, as it has been alleged, to profit by the disorder for the commission of murder and plunder. Their insurrection was spontaneous, because it was the effect of the general conviction; and the Mountain itself, weak and astonished at this movement, has proved that it did not concur to produce it. Thus this insurrection has been wholly moral and wholly popular." This was at once giving a favourable colour to the insurrection, addressing an indirect censure to the Mountain, which had shown some hesitation on the 2nd of June, repelling the charge of conspiracy preferred against the leaders of the left side, and agreeably flattering the popular party, which had behaved so well and done every thing of itself. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of the French Revolution, Vol. 1 of 4 It is to be regretted that an author so well versed in the annals of his country as M. Thiers, has not thought it worth his while to enter more into detail on the subject of the numerous secondary causes which helped to bring about the French Revolution. It will be observed that, after a few brief introductory paragraphs, of a didactic rather than an historical character, he comes at once to his subject, as if he took for granted that all his readers were as well acquainted as himself with the remote, as well as with the immediate, origin of that memorable event His history may be said to commence with the derangement of the national finances after the death of Maurepas; but the seeds of the revolution were sown long before his time. The immediately pro pelling cause was no doubt financial, but the struggle had become ne cessary - it may almost be said from the day of the decease (if the Grand Monarque. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the French Revolution of 1848 In all beings God has proportioned this period of growth to the length of existence which he destines to them. Man, who is to live for a century, grows for five and twenty years, or even longer. Nations, which are to live through two or three thousand years, have revolutions of_development - of childhood, youth, manhood, and at length old age, which last not less than two or three centuries. The difficulty with the vulgar is, amid those convulsive phenomena whlch mark the revolutions of a nation, to distinguish the crises of growth from those of decay, youth from old age, and life from death. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the French Revolution of 1848, Vol. 1 of 2 Louis Philippe of Orleans was called to the throne as the living and crowned revolution of 1789. This prince yet lives, but there is as wide a Space between the throne and exile as between life and death, and Ishull speak of him with the same freedom as if he had ceased to exist. Living, I did not atter him. I held myself at a respectful distance from his kingdom and his favors; and, exiled and dead to power, I will not insult him. Exile and years command more respect than even the grave, from the hearts of men. France had the right to suffer him to fall from the throne. History, in my opinion, will have neither the right of hating nor that of disdaining him. The man occupies a large space by himself in his reign, and his reign will fill a great space also in history. There is nothing so mean as to dwarf one's enemies. The people who have suc ceeded Louis Philippe have no need of this subterfuge of kings, who always insult their predecessors. The people are great enough to measure themselves with a dethroned king, and to concede his full height to the sovereign they have displaced. The French Revolution in English History (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Philip Anthony Brown

Book Description
Excerpt from The French Revolution in English History He showed in the army the same power of leading men which he had possessed in his teaching life, and the same power of attracting love. His letters will, I understand, be published, together with the full memoir. For the present it will be enough to record briefly the manner of his death. It was on the night of 4th November 1915, in a thick fog, that he was out on patrol with his servant and friend, Private Thomas Kenny, when some Germans, who were lying out in a ditch in front of their parapet, Opened fire, and he fell shot through both thighs. Kenny took him on his back, and through heavy and repeated fire crawled about for more than an hour, trying to find his way in the fog back to our trenches. Brown repeatedly urged Kenny to leave him, but Kenny would not. At last, when the wounded man had lost consciousness and Kenny him self was almost exhausted, he came to a ditch which he recognised. Here he left Brown and went on to look for help. Eventually he found some men at a listening post, and guided them back to where Brown lay, though the enemy opened heavy fire with rifles and machine guns and threw bombs at thirty yards' distance. When Brown was at last brought in he recovered consciousness for a short time. We hear that he smiled and said, Well, Kenny, you're a hero, and soon afterwards died. Kenny was awarded the Victoria Cross. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
