Valles Caldera

Valles Caldera PDF Author: WILLIAM. DEBUYS
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780890136577

Languages : en
Pages : 192

Book Description
About 1.25 million years ago, a spectacular volcanic eruption created the 13-mile wide circular depression now known as the Valles Caldera, located in northern New Mexico. This revised & expanded edition marks the twentieth anniversary of the Valles Caldera Preservation Act, a visionary piece of legislation that transferred to the public domain a privately owned ranch (signed in 2000 by President Bill Clinton). The preserve was assigned to a board of citizens appointed by the president to manage it as a self-sustaining preserve. The experiment in semi-private land management ended in 2014 as the Valles Caldera was legislatively reassigned to the National Park Service.

Day and Section Hikes Pacific Crest Trail: Southern California

Day and Section Hikes Pacific Crest Trail: Southern California PDF Author: David Money Harris
Publisher: Wilderness Press
ISBN: 0899976840
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 204

Book Description
The Pacific Crest Trail was designated as one of the first National Scenic Trails way back in 1968. As it traverses the “high road” from Mexico to Canada, incredible views are not only commonplace but also uniquely diverse, because the trail connects six of North America’s seven eco-zones. The PCT’s familiar, well-worn path is a special place for hikers from all walks of life on walks of all lengths and for all reasons. Instead of guiding you through the arduous task of hiking the entire PCT, the goal of this book is to help you plan trips that incorporate hiking on the PCT in Southern California, whether you have just an afternoon to spare or you want to escape for the entire weekend. Carefully edited maps and elevation graphs generated with GPS data collected by the author on the trail will help make your trip a success. This cargo-pocket guide offers author-tested advice to help you make the most of your time away from civilization, however long (or short) that stretch may be.

Rez Metal

Rez Metal PDF Author: Ashkan Soltani Stone
Publisher: U of Nebraska Press
ISBN: 1496222482
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 95

Book Description
Rez Metal captures the creative energy of Indigenous youth culture in the twenty-first century. Bridging communities from disparate corners of Indian Country and across generations, heavy metal has touched a collective nerve on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona in particular. Many cultural leaders--including former Navajo president Russell Begaye--have begun to recognize heavy metal's ability to inspire Navajo communities facing chronic challenges such as poverty, depression, and addiction. Heavy metal music speaks to the frustrations, fears, trials, and hopes of living in Indian Country. Rez Metal highlights a seminal moment in Indigenous heavy metal: when Kyle Felter, lead singer of the Navajo heavy metal band I Dont Konform, sent a demo tape to Flemming Rasmussen, the Grammy Award-winning producer of several Metallica albums, including Master of Puppets. A few months later, Rasmussen, captivated by the music, flew from Denmark to Window Rock, Arizona, to meet the band. Through a series of vivid images and interviews focused on the venues, bands, and fans of the Navajo Nation metal scene, Rez Metal provides a window into this fascinating world.

Cross Country

Cross Country PDF Author: Rickey Gates
Publisher: Chronicle Books
ISBN: 1452181608
Category : Travel
Languages : en
Pages : 258

Book Description
In 2017, professional runner Rickey Gates ran 3,700 miles across the continental United States with just a small backpack and an anthropologist's curiosity to discover the divided America in which we live. In the book Cross Country, Gates documents this epic experience from South Carolina to San Francisco, sharing first-person essays, interviews, and over 200 photographs of the ordinary and extraordinary people and places he saw along the way. While Gates delivers unparalleled insight into the extreme athletic and mental challenge of this transcontinental run, running is not the core focus of Cross Country—it is a story of the remarkable people across the United States who we would otherwise never meet. • A photographic travelogue that follows along Rickey Gates's run across the country, and the individuals who live in it • Filled with portraits, landscapes, and collages of towns and communities that most people have never seen • From South Carolina to San Francisco, the five-month-long run covers 3,700 miles of hiking trails, rivers, and roads. Gates slept in the rain, carried meager possessions on his back, ran through the night, endured mental and physical challenges, and survived on a staple of gas station hot dogs and Pop Tarts. Delivering a patchwork portrait of America, Gates's captivating story captures the spirit of our country—that grit, determination, and compassion are qualities that can unite us all. • Perfect book for runners, hikers, and lovers of the outdoors, as well as fans of travelogues, photography, and photo-journalism • A great pick for those who loved Humans of New York by Brandon Stanton, The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey by Rinker Buck, and A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail by Bill Bryson. • A unique perspective of the United States
