Book Description
A fracture mechanics based approach using wedge and double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens is being used to evaluate the durability of a titanium/adhesive system. The adhesive used was a polyimide, developed by NASA Langley Research Center, modified and supplied by Cytec Engineered Materials, Inc., and designated as FM5. Prior to bonding, the adherend surfaces were pretreated by one of two surface pretreatments: phenylethynyl trimethyl silane or chromic acid anodization.

Progress in Durability Analysis of Composite Systems

Progress in Durability Analysis of Composite Systems PDF Author: K.L. Reifsnider
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9789054109600
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 380

Book Description
Composite material systems are the basis for much of the natural world around us and are rapidly becoming the basis for many modern engineering components. A controlling feature for the general use of such systems is their damage tolerance, durability and reliability. The present book is a comprehensive cross section of the state of the art in the field of the durability of polymer-based, composite, and adhesive systems. As such, it is of special value to researchers concerned with the frontier of the field, to students concerned with the substance of the subject, and to the applied community concerned with the finding methodologies that make it possible to design safe and durable engineering components using material systems.

The Effects of Environmental Exposure on Strength Properties of AF-A-3639 Adhesive Bonded Joints

The Effects of Environmental Exposure on Strength Properties of AF-A-3639 Adhesive Bonded Joints PDF Author: Theodore J. Aponyi
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 41

Book Description
A new adhesive, AF-A-3639, (Hysol's ADX- 639), a 420 F capability tough adhesive, is characterized for its durability when exposed to hostile environments such as, heat aging plus salt spray, humid aging, humid aging and elevated temperature cycling, and fatigue. Specimens used in the evaluation are aluminum-to-aluminum and titanium-to-titanium. The adhesive exhibits excellent retention of initial strength after all the tests except for those at 420 F with titanium specimens. However, these lower strength levels are attributed to the cold phosphate etch used as a pretreatment for the titanium adherends. (Author-PL).
