Designed to provide a link between academic thought and research and the practice of teaching, this monograph explores the appropriate educational response to technological change. The central argument of this study is that future job opportunities will lie essentially with low tech jobs, i.e., traditional, basic, industrial jobs, rather than the more glamorous high tech jobs, even in high tech industries. Various approaches to technological change are discussed, including the deterministic approach, the dialectic approach, and Luddism. Also discussed are technological cycles; the Silicon Valley model; the gender implications of technological change; and the influence of high tech on education, including high tech/low tech jobs and the educational response.
