How Oregon Farmers Select and Use Herbicides on Wheat
Author: Richard Ray Fine
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Herbicides

Pages : 264
Book Description
Questionnaires were used in a survey of Oregon farmers to determine how they select and use herbicides on wheat. Farmer's decisions were evaluated on the basis of their ability to: select the proper herbicide treatment for their weed problem and to make application at the proper time. Questionnaire scores indicated quality of the decisions was inversely related to the age of the respondents; and that formal education had little effect. Scores were most affected by size of the wheat operation, i.e., quality of decisions increased as acreage increased. Wheat farmere relied primarily upon commercial entities, especially commercial applicators, for their herbicide information. Extension agents and other public agencies or neighbors and friends were the next most frequently used information sources followed by mass media as the least used source. Studies of first and second choices of information showed the same pattern as for the most useful or principal sources. Better decisions were made relative to herbicide selection than for proper time of application. Time was not a limiting factor in the former decision but was in the latter. Willamette Valley farmers scored higher than those in the Columbia Basin. Differences in scores were attributed basically to the complex nature of the week problems and their solutions in the Columbia Basin as compared to those in the Willamette Valley. Also, many herbicide treatments are relatively new in the Columbia Basin whereas those in the Willamette Valley have been recommended and used for several years. The results of this study would indicate that efforts of the extension service would be most effective if directed toward the commercial applicator, dealer and other commercial contacts of the individual farmer since they are the major sources of information. Although mentioned to a lesser degree than the commercial entities, the extension service and other government organizations may serve as independent information sources for general decisions which once made are carried out with detailed information from commercial sources.
