Informs Knox that the final note is in Nourse or Hillegas's office (Jackson sold [Dollar sign]10,000 worth of Knox's notes without his permission and attempted to retrieve them at Knox's request). Expresses hope that New Hampshire will adopt the Constitution (New Hampshire in fact ratified the Constitution 21 June 1788). Reports that the General Court of Massachusetts (the Massachusetts legislature) will remain adjourned until September 1788 at which time, he hopes, they will be able to give orders to the people to choose the members for the General Government. Obtained a resolve from the General Court that he hopes will make up for the loss I have sustained by pledging myself for the clothing & supplies to the late Federal troops- Docket indicates answered the 29th and assured him the note 1045 was not ever received at Nourses office. Writes a friendly letter in which he presents news on a variety of subjects. First, mentions that he applied to Judge Wendell for certificates that they had been discussing. He has so far been unsuccessful but will try again. John Hancock is feeling better and will soon depart [likely for New York]. General [Benjamin] Lincoln and another friend [possibly Thomas Russell] have purchased two townships and Lincoln is very pleased with them. Mentions that the Ohio Company were mentioned in the newspaper and that he apparently intends to invest with them. Comments that the General Court has laid a tax on the Waldo Estate. Mentions a caning match that recently happened when Mr. Winslow Warren attacked an apparently defenseless Mr. John Codman with his cane. Codman is very bruised and everyone has condemned Warren's behavior. Asks that if Mr. Hutchins, the present Surveyor General, quits his post, their old friend General [Rufus] Putnam would like to be appointed. Putnam has already prepared to survey the Waldo patent when the weather permits. Several of their friends will soon be getting married, and all Knox's friends in Boston send their love to him and his wife and family.

Informs Knox that Mr. King is chosen as one of the Delegates to the Convention for the town of Newbury and the other three gentlemen for that town are high Federal Men, Indeed all the Towns that have as yet chosen, have confined their choice wholly to Federal Men & those of the best abilities - thus far it looks well, indeed, more than well, I pray god it may finally be adopted in this State - if it were not, I dread the consequences that must & will follow - there is, and will be an opposition against it... & your friend in Milton Hill [James Warren] with some others are at the head of it. Comments that the general court adjourned and the members left with favorable ideas about the constitution. Details the execution of one of his former soldiers in Boston for burglary. I wish you could find a berth in your office for him he is ill except of any thing if he can be with you. He considers you, his friend & Father. Sends regards to Mrs. Knox and their children.
