Book Description
Viral hemorrhagic fevers have captured the imagination of the public and made their way into popular books and movies by virtue of their extreme virulence and mysterious origins. Since 2001, concerns have grown about the potential use of many hemorrhagic fever viruses as biological weapons. This has led to a resurgence in research to develop improved diagnostics, vaccines, and therapeutics—both for biodefense purposes and to treat naturally exposed persons. Written by international experts, Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers represents a major contribution to the virological literature and updates the state of knowledge of these dangerous illnesses. Topics include: A historical perspective and information on pathogenesis and immune responses Animal models, which are critical to the development of vaccines and therapeutics The roles of high-containment facilities and specially trained scientists in research Prevention and control, including diagnostics and vaccine development Old World Lassa and Lujo viruses and the New World Junin and Machupo viruses Guanarito viruses and their cellular receptors Bunyaviruses, including Rift Valley Fever, Crimean– Congo hemorrhagic fever, and hantaviruses that cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome The Ebola and Marburg filoviruses Flaviviruses, including dengue fever, yellow fever, Kyanasur Forest, Alkhurma, and Omsk hemorrhagic fever viruses and other flaviviruses with hemorrhagic potential Virologists, clinicians, biomedical researchers, microbiologists, and others needing a rapid overview of the nature of these illnesses will find this book an essential resource on clinical and basic science aspects of many viral hemorrhagic fevers. The book will also provide researchers with a springboard to further inquiry in combating what has become a major global threat.

Vascular Responses to Pathogens

ISBN: 0128013257
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 254

Book Description
Vascular Responses to Pathogens focuses on the growing research from leaders in the field for both the short and long-term impact of pathogens on the vasculature. It discusses various organisms, including bacteria, parasites, and viruses, and their role in key events leading to vascular disease. Formatted to discuss the topic of the interaction of pathogens with the vascular rather than individual diseases described separately, this reference demonstrates that common mechanisms are at play in many different diseases because they have a similar context, their vasculature. This all-inclusive reference book is a must-have tool for researchers and practicing clinicians in the areas of vascular biology, microvasculature, cardiology, and infectious disease. Covers a wide spectrum of organisms and provides analysis of pathogens and current therapeutic strategies in the context of their vasculature Provides detailed perspectives on key components contributing to vascular pathogens from leaders in the field Interfaces between both vascular biology and microbiology by encompassing information on how pathogens affect both macro and microvasculature Includes coverage of the clinical aspects of sepsis and current therapeutic strategies and anti-sepsis drugs

Some Aspects of the Problem of Viral Encephalitis and Hemorrhagic Fevers in Siberia and in the Far East

Some Aspects of the Problem of Viral Encephalitis and Hemorrhagic Fevers in Siberia and in the Far East PDF Author: G. I. Netsky
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 6

Book Description
Siberia and the Far East have a special role in the study of viral encephalitis and hemorrhagic fevers, taking into account also discovery in the Far East (1936-1938) of tick-borne encephalitis (TE), Japanese (mosquito) encephalitis (JE), and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (Far Eastern hemorrhagic nephrosonephritis). The discovery in Siberia of Omsk hemorrhagic fever (OHF) which is similar to but not identical to tick-borne encephalitis (1946-1948) was of great importance for development of the problem of arbovirus infection. The report presents brief characteristics of basic directions which have been determined for future investigations of regional epidemiology and prophylactic measures against the mentioned infections in Siberia and the Far East. Zoonotic Viruses of Northern Eurasia

Zoonotic Viruses of Northern Eurasia PDF Author: Dimitry Konstantinovich Lvov
Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0128018445
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 453

Book Description
Zoonotic Viruses of Northern Eurasia: Taxonomy and Ecology provides a review of modern data of the taxonomy, distribution, and ecology of zoonotic viruses in the ecosystems of Northern Eurasia. With climate changes, increasing population density of arthropod vectors and vertebrate hosts, development of unused lands, transferences of viruses by birds, bats, infected humans, and animals, vectors allow virus populations to adapt to the new environment. This leads to the appearance of emerging or re-emerging infections. This book presents data about circulation and evolution of influenza viruses, tick-borne encephalitis virus, West Nile virus, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus, hantaviruses, Sindbis virus, California encephalitis group viruses and other pathogenic viruses as well as of novel viruses classified for the first time using next-generation sequence. Features summarized data about the circulation of approximately 80 viruses isolated in natural foci of Northern Eurasia Provides descriptions of the main ecosystems of Northern Eurasia in the context of the ecology of viruses with environmental factors Delineates the potential impact of climate change for the distribution of viruses Includes virus taxonomy, ecology, distribution and pathogenicity for humans and animals

Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (Korean Hemorrhagic Fever).

Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (Korean Hemorrhagic Fever). PDF Author:
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
World-wide, about 200,000 people are hospitalized with Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) (3 - 10% fatality) each year. The etiologic agents of HFRS are Hantaan, Seoul and Puumala viruses of the genus Hantavirus, family Bunyaviridae. A severe form of HFRS, caused by Hantaan virus, occurs in Asia and eastern parts of Europe, a moderate form, caused by Seoul virus, occurs in Asia, and mild form, caused by Puumala virus, occurs in Europe. The reservoirs of hantaviruses are rodents and other small mammals. Global surveys of the distribution of hantaviruses and surveillance of HFRS are important for prevention of this highly fatal disease. A simple and rapid serologic diagnostic test for HFRS in the areas where hantaviruses exist is urgently needed. It is also important to investigate antigenic differences of strains of Hantavirus isolated from rodents caught in non-endemic areas of the world because HFRS patients have never been documented in many areas despite the finding of positive rodents there. Keywords: Hantavirus, Hantaan, Seoul, Puumala virus, Global survey, Hemorrhagic diseases, High density, Particle agglutination. (js).
