Hell's Gate

Hell's Gate PDF Author: Stephen Frey
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 141654965X
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 338

Book Description
It's fire season in Montana... From New York Times bestselling author Stephen Frey comes a riveting new thriller about a disillusioned star litigator who goes west to forge a new life in Big Sky Country -- and stumbles onto the toughest case of his career. When thirty-five-year-old lawyer Hunter Lee decides to turn his back on the New York City rat race that has made him rich but cost him his marriage, he takes his brother's advice and sets out to build a new life in the beautiful but isolated town of Fort Mason, Montana. However, escape is hardly what he finds there. Hunter befriends Paul Brule, a Fire Jumper -- one of an elite corps of firefighters who parachute into remote wilderness areas to put out blazes before they become infernos -- and gets a terrifying firsthand look at the reality of vast tracts of forest being reduced to ash in seconds by hundred-foot walls of flame. In this tiny town where everyone seems to have a secret, Hunter comes to suspect that this particular rash of summer fires is anything but accidental and could, in fact, be serving a more sinister purpose. As Hunter follows his instincts, Montana becomes a crucible where good and evil collide -- and where one man, running from his past, takes on the burden of exposing the guilty while saving himself and those he cares about most from the greatest danger they have ever faced.

Book Description
From New York Times bestselling author Stephen Frey comes a riveting new thriller about a world-weary star litigator who goes west to become a firefighter in the nation’s greatest woodland—and stumbles across the toughest case of his career. With fifteen novels under his belt, including such bestsellers as The Takeover and The Insider, veteran suspense writer Stephen Frey has long since proven himself as a master of the sophisticated thriller. Now, with Hell’s Gate, he makes a bold departure into new territory with a story that is literally as explosive as it is impossible to set down. When thirty-five-year-old litigator Hunter Lee decides to turn his back on the rat race that has made him rich but cost him his marriage, he takes the advice of his brother and goes to Montana. There he joins the elite Smoke Jumpers, marines of the firefighting world, who parachute out of C-5 airplanes to contain the worst forest fires of the remote west. But escape from the ugly side of human nature is hardly what he finds when word reaches him of a small town’s little secret involving arson and the reckless quest for profits at the expense of lives. As Hunter follows his instincts, rural Montana becomes a crucible where good and evil collide—and where one man, running from his past, takes on the Herculean task of exposing the guilty while saving himself and those he cares about most from the biggest foe he has ever faced.

On the Road Again

On the Road Again PDF Author: William Wyckoff
Publisher: University of Washington Press
ISBN: 0295802324
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 200

Book Description
In On the Road Again, William Wyckoff explores Montana’s changing physical and cultural landscape by pairing photographs taken by state highway engineers in the 1920s and 1930s with photographs taken at the same sites today. The older photographs, preserved in the archives of the Montana Historical Society, were intended to document the expenditure of federal highway funds. Because it is nearly impossible to photograph a road without also photographing the landscape through which that road passes, these images contain a wealth of information about the state’s environment during the early decades of the twentieth century. To highlight landscape changes -- and continuities -- over more than eighty years, Wyckoff chose fifty-eight documented locations and traveled to each to photograph the exact same view. The pairs of old and new photos and accompanying interpretive essays presented here tell a vivid story of physical, cultural, and economic change. Wyckoff has grouped his selections to cover a fairly even mix of views from the eastern and western parts of the state, including a wide assortment of land use settings and rural and urban landscapes. The photo pairs are organized in thirteen “visual themes,” such as forested areas, open spaces, and sacred spaces, which parallel landscape change across the entire American West. A close, thoughtful look at these photographs reveals how crops, fences, trees, and houses shape the everyday landscape, both in the first quarter of the twentieth century and in the present. The photographs offer an intimate view into Montana, into how Montana has changed in the past eighty years and how it may continue to change in the twenty-first century. This is a book that will captivate readers who have, or hope to have, a tie to the Montana countryside, whether as resident or visitor. Regional and agricultural historians, geographers and geologists, and rural and urban planners will all find it fascinating.

In the Name of the Salish & Kootenai Nation

In the Name of the Salish & Kootenai Nation PDF Author: Robert Bigart
Publisher: Pablo, Mont. : Salish Kootenai College Press
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 184

Book Description
On July 16, 1855, eighteen leaders of the Flathead, Kootenai, and Upper Pend d'Oreilles Indians signed an agreement with the United States government, ceding their title to almost all the land in western Montana and establishing the Flathead Indian Reservation. Born of confusion and disagreement, the Hell Gate Treaty is the legal basis for the modern relationship between the tribes and the federal government. In the Name of the Salish & Kootenai Nation reproduces the complete text of the Hell Gate Treaty and collects previously published documents relating to the treaty, among them the official proceedings of the treaty council, Gustavus Sohon's portraits of many of the treaty signers, and letters from the Jesuit priest, Adrian Hoecken, who was present at the treaty deliberations. These documents are presented in the hope that they will inspire further questions and research.
