Religion and Sexuality

Religion and Sexuality PDF Author: Lawrence Foster
Publisher: University of Illinois Press
ISBN: 9780252011191
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 382

Book Description
"Most writers have treated these three groups and the social ferment out of which they grew as simply an American sideshow. . . . In this book, therefore, I have attempted to go beyond the conventional focus on what these groups did; I have also sought to explain why they did what they did and how successful they were in terms of their own objectives. By trying sympathetically to understand these extraordinary experiments in social and religious revitalization, I believe it is possible to come to terms with a broader set of questions that affect all men and women during times of crisis and transition."--From the preface Winner of the Best Book Award, Mormon History Association

Who Was the Mother of Harlots?: Unlocking the Key to Revelation

Who Was the Mother of Harlots?: Unlocking the Key to Revelation PDF Author: MR Steve Temple
Publisher: Jadon Productions
ISBN: 9781937501044
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 110

Book Description
Babylon in Revelation, is a key to proper understanding of "the end times." She is described as "the mother of harlots." Most commentators ignore the OT marriage covenant language of the term "harlot." It is assumed that a "harlot" was simply an immoral woman. Not so! As Temple effectively shows, in scripture, a harlot was a wife who had become unfaithful. This has tremendous implications for the dating and understanding of Revelation. Temple does a marvelous job of documenting the temporal setting, the language of marriage covenant and thus, the proper identity of the harlot city Babylon. This is a tremendously important book that you definitely want in your library!

On Loss and Losing

On Loss and Losing PDF Author: Melvyn L. Fein
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351502085
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 509

Book Description
All people suffer instances of personal loss that cause distress. All too often, their discomfort is treated as a medical issue requiring treatment-usually through medication. Melvyn L. Fein argues for a broader understanding of loss and losing that offers another approach, which he characterizes as "resocialization." Indeed, how a person thinks, feels, and acts may all need to be reorganized if personal distress is to be overcome. Fein urges that we distinguish between the loss of something we once possessed and losing something that never came to fruition. Thus, it is possible never to achieve vital social roles, social statuses, and/or personal bonds, despite our individual efforts. While some of these losses are not necessarily problematic, others are extremely painful. Unfortunately, rather than investigate the source of this discomfort, distraught individuals frequently seek refuge in simplistic solutions. As a consequence, one of the reasons the medical model remains dominant is that the alternative is imperfectly understood. Fein presents a compelling case for a sociological interpretation of personal distress. Although he acknowledges that some personal suffering derives from biological sources, and that mental illnesses can spill over to cause social dysfunctions, he argues that it is important to recognize the social causes of human suffering. In thereby recognizing the limitations of the human condition, most of us can do better than blindly accept an inherited dedication to the medical model. On Loss and Losing offers a legitimate option without denying the reality of human suffering.

Misunderstanding Cults

Misunderstanding Cults PDF Author: Benjamin Zablocki
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 1487598440
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 860

Book Description
Misunderstanding Cults provides a uniquely balanced contribution to what has become a highly polarized area of study. Working towards a moderate "third path" in the heated debate over new religious movements or cults, this collection includes contributions from both scholars who have been characterized as "anticult" and those characterized as "cult-apologists." The study incorporates multiple viewpoints as well as a variety of theoretical and methodological perspectives, with the stated goal of depolarizing the discussion over alternative religious movements. A prominent section within the book focuses explicitly on the issue of scholarly objectivity and the danger of partisanship in the study of cults. The collection also includes contributions on the controversial and much misunderstood topic of brainwashing, as well as discussions of cult violence, children brought up in unconventional religious movements, and the conflicts between alternative religious movements and their critics. Unique in its breadth, this is the first study of new religious movements to address the main points of controversy within the field while attempting to find a middle ground between opposing camps of scholarship.
