Book Description
Excerpt from Health Education in Rural Schools The winning of the war has long commanded the atten tion of the American people. Our resources have been spent lavishly to make secure our liberties and the freedom of the world. Such a supreme crisis in our history revealed inspir ing patriotism, but also a pathetic weakness in our citizens. Out of 06 men who were examined on the first draft, a vast army of men were rejected on physical grounds. A large proportion of these physical defects might have been corrected or prevented if the schools had been doing their part to train children to conserve and improve their health. Such a serious flaw in public education must challenge the efforts of educators throughout the land. Several States, realizing the gravity of the situation, have recently passed laws making physical education obligatory and requiring a more extensive and practical teaching of hygiene.' The war has compelled us to recognize, as we never did before, the fundamental importance of health education as preparedness, not only for military service, but also for happy and efficient participation in civil life. Contrary to tradition and popular belief, country children have been found to be as defective physically and in many cases more defective than city children. Comparatively little has been done so far for the health of country children. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Improvement of the Rural School (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Harlan Updegraff

Book Description
Excerpt from The Improvement of the Rural School The improvement of the rural school is, at the present time, one of our most important educational problems. Although it does not present the same aspects in every state, no section is freed from the responsibility of endeavoring to, find its solution. It is not a new problem. Ever since the time of James G. Carter, and of Horace Mann, educators have called attention to the deficiencies of the coun try school. The counts in the indictment which have been brought against it through all these years differ but little, unattractive sites, miserable buildings, insufficient equipment, poorly prepared and poorly paid teachers, inadequate and incom petent supervision, unevenly distributed enrollment, irregular attendance, meager curriculum, and a poorly conducted school. Although it is true that much progress has been made in these particulars during the past three - quarters of a century, and although in certain localities conditions are con sidered fairly satisfactory, the need for reform is more strongly and more generally expressed to - day.
