Book Description
Peter Silverlos Livingston was born before World War II and would be considered a traditionalist in today’s jargon. There is an old saying, “You can take the kid out of Brooklyn but you can’t take Brooklyn out of the kid”. As a young kid growing up in Brooklyn, New York, Peter had the opportunity of being involved in many activities as a young boy. Brooklyn was the most populated of the five boroughs of New York City with over 3 million people of mostly European extraction including many other ethnic races from all over the world during World War II. New York City was and still is the biggest city in the country. There were more combat troops from Brooklyn than any other area in the country. Over three thousand died in World War II. The average age of those who fought and died in WWII was 26 years old. Believe It or not, the average age of those who fought and died in Vietnam was 19 years old. Also, Marine casualties in Viet Nam totaled over 13 thousand. The Viet Nam war was one of the longest U.S. conflicts to date totaling ten years from 1965 to 1975, but the U.S. had advisors there for a number of years even before 1965. Over 58,000 U.S. troops died in Viet Nam and some are still Missing In Action (MIA’s) like the great track and field star Cliff Cushman. He was from the University of Kansas and was a silver medalist in the Olympics and a track buddy of Pete's. He flew an Air Force jet when he went missing. The Viet Nam Veterans Memorial wall in Washington D.C. is a long black slab marble wall dedicated to all the fallen warriors and those that served and fought in Viet Nam, including those who are still MIA. Each of the soldiers names are inscribed on it in chronological order based on the date they died and served. This honor has been bestowed on all these veterans who courageously fought in the Viet Nam war conflict as remembered by the United States which dedicated the building of this wall in their honor. The monument’s importance and significance is a symbol for all peoples in the United States and future generations to remember the sacrifice these veterans undertook regarding this conflict.

Working alongside the US Army, men from all corners of the globe volunteered to risk their lives day after day fighting someone else's war - and all for a few bucks and a suntan...One of these mercenaries was Pete Mercer. An ex-Royal Marine and former member of the navy's elite SBS, Pete's been to some pretty hot places but even he didn't know what to expect. During 15 months of high-tempo missions putting him literally right on the firing line, the frenetic life of the mercenary changed from one week to the next. Only the constants remained: dirt, danger, excitement, and the ever-present gallows humour in the face of huge casualty rates. Sent on suicidal runs designed to draw out the enemy insurgents, Pete's team were expendable men, charged with making the hard yards on behalf of the most sophisticated army in the world. Any when the orders started coming right from the top - from the CIA itself - things really started to heat up...

The Incomplete Book of Running
Author: Peter Sagal
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
ISBN: 1451696256
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 224
Book Description
Peter Sagal, the host of NPR’s Wait Wait...Don’t Tell Me! and a popular columnist for Runner’s World, shares “commentary and reflection about running with a deeply felt personal story, this book is winning, smart, honest, and affecting. Whether you are a runner or not, it will move you” (Susan Orlean). On the verge of turning forty, Peter Sagal—brainiac Harvard grad, short bald Jew with a disposition towards heft, and a sedentary star of public radio—started running seriously. And much to his own surprise, he kept going, faster and further, running fourteen marathons and logging tens of thousands of miles on roads, sidewalks, paths, and trails all over the United States and the world, including the 2013 Boston Marathon, where he crossed the finish line moments before the bombings. In The Incomplete Book of Running, Sagal reflects on the trails, tracks, and routes he’s traveled, from the humorous absurdity of running charity races in his underwear—in St. Louis, in February—or attempting to “quiet his colon” on runs around his neighborhood—to the experience of running as a guide to visually impaired runners, and the triumphant post-bombing running of the Boston Marathon in 2014. With humor and humanity, Sagal also writes about the emotional experience of running, body image, the similarities between endurance sports and sadomasochism, the legacy of running as passed down from parent to child, and the odd but extraordinary bonds created between strangers and friends. The result is “a brilliant book about running…What Peter runs toward is strength, understanding, endurance, acceptance, faith, hope, and charity” (P.J. O’Rourke).

Peter's War
Author: Joyce Lee Malcolm
Publisher: Yale University Press
ISBN: 0300142765
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 266
Book Description
A riveting narrative of a New England slave boy caught up in the American Revolution A boy named Peter, born to a slave in Massachusetts in 1763, was sold nineteen months later to a childless white couple there. This book recounts the fascinating history of how the American Revolution came to Peter's small town, how he joined the revolutionary army at the age of twelve, and how he participated in the battles of Bunker Hill and Yorktown and witnessed the surrender at Saratoga.Joyce Lee Malcolm describes Peter’s home life in rural New England, which became increasingly unhappy as he grew aware of racial differences and prejudices. She then relates how he and other blacks, slave and free, joined the war to achieve their own independence. Malcolm juxtaposes Peter’s life in the patriot armies with that of the life of Titus, a New Jersey slave who fled to the British in 1775 and reemerged as a feared guerrilla leader.A remarkable feat of investigation, Peter’s biography illuminates many themes in American history: race relations in New England, the prelude to and military history of the Revolutionary War, and the varied experience of black soldiers who fought on both sides.
