En el marco de la Fundación Alternativas, un equipo de investigadores ha estudiado las transformaciones que las nuevas tecnologías y redes digitales están produciendo en la comunicación y las industrias culturales en general, y las tendencias y escenarios que se están ya configurando en Europa, Estados Unidos y Latinoamérica. Se ofrece así una perspectiva internacional de los temas estudiados en el primer volumen dedicado a España Comunicación y cultura en la era digital. Industrias, mercados y diversidad en España (Gedisa, 2002). En el presente volumen, se analizan los principales sectores digitales, desde el disco, el libro y el cine hasta la prensa, la radio, la televisión y los videojuegos; y se examinan los principales retos transversales planteados: las estrategias de los grupos multimedia, los derechos de autor, las experiencias de políticas culturales y comunicativas en nuevas redes. En conclusión, se constata la construcción de un nuevo Sistema Mundial de Comunicación y Cultura, fraguado de pugnas y coexistencias analógicas y digitales, con notables posibilidades para construir una cultura más rica y plural. Pero también se comprueba un salto cualitativo de la mercantilización y la internacionalización de las Industrias Culturales, con el riesgo de ahondar la fractura digital en este campo. Un desafío trascendental que apela a la reformulación de políticas públicas coherentes que coloquen a la cultura en el centro del desarrollo.
