ISBN: 1134664826
Category : Science

Book Description
Process" approaches to economic and social development appear to be more flexible and offer greater prospects of success than traditional "project" methods. Development as Process addresses the questions raised by the different natures of the two approaches. The authors examine development projects through experience in water resources development in India and in organizational learning by a Bangladeshi NGO. Inter-agency contexts are examined in the setting of an aquaculture project in Bangladesh and in the setting of agriculture and natural resources development in Rajisthan, India. Finally, the role of process monitoring is explained in the context of policy reform, with illustrations from forestry in India and land reform in Russia.

A Moral Critique of Development

A Moral Critique of Development PDF Author: Anta Kumar Giri
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134475330
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 330

Book Description
Recent critiques of international development practice, affecting aid organizations such as Oxfam, Action Aid and the Red Cross, have attacked the motives of those heading the 'machine' of development suggesting that it is in reality just too politically complex for good ever to come of it. But, despite the genuine need for a critical appraisal of development work, the anti-development backlash would appear to result in a moral dilemma. Should we try to help countries and people in need, or refuse potentially corrupt or harmful involvement? This book comments on how international development might once again become a visionary project. With perspectives from workers in the development industry, it draws lessons from actual projects to propose a theory of 'emergent ethics': that local moral responses to specific projects must form the basis of a way forward.

Cultures of Development

Cultures of Development PDF Author: Jonathan Warren
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1134859767
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 203

Book Description
The North Atlantic development establishment has had a blemished track record over the past 65 years. In addition to a sizeable portfolio of failure, the few economic success stories in the developing world, such as South Korea and China, have been achieved by rejecting the advice of Western experts. Despite these realities, debates within mainstream development studies have stagnated around a narrow, acultural emphasis on institutions or the size and role of government. Cultures of Development uses a contrapuntal comparison of Vietnam and Brazil to show why it is important for development scholars and practitioners to broaden their conceptualization of economies to include the socio-cultural. This smartly written book based on original, ethnographic research breathes new life into development studies by bringing cultural studies into conversation with development studies, with an emphasis on improving—rather than merely critiquing—market economies. The applied deployment of critical development studies, i.e., interpretive economics, results in a number of theoretical advances in both development and areas studies, demonstrating the economic importance of certain kinds of cultural work carried out by religious leaders, artists, activists, and educators. Most importantly, the reader comes to fully appreciate how economies are embedded within the subjectivities, discourses, symbols, rituals, norms, and values of a given society. This pioneering book revives development practice and policy by offering fresh insights and ideas about how development can be advanced. It will be of special interest to scholars and students of Development Studies, Sociology, Economics, Anthropology, and Area Studies.

The Ethnography of Vietnam's Central Highlanders

The Ethnography of Vietnam's Central Highlanders PDF Author: Oscar Salemink
Publisher: University of Hawaii Press
ISBN: 9780824825799
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 506

Book Description
This book looks at the multiple relations between the ethnographic representations of the Montagnard ethnic groups in the Central Highlands of Vietnam and the changing historical context in and for which the ethnographies were produced and in which they were consumed. There are two major arguments developed by the author. It is maintained that economic, political, and military interests within a specific historical context condition ethnographic practice. This is not however a one-way process: the author also argues that the ensuing ethnographic discourses in turn influence the historical context by suggesting and facilitating ethnic policies and by contributing to the formation or change of ethnic identities through processes of classification. Oscar Salemink describes ethnographic discourses concerning the indigenous population of Vietnam’s Central Highlands during periods of Christianization, colonization, war, and socialist transformation, and analyzes these in their relation to tribal, ethnic, territorial, governmental, and gendered discourses.
