Excerpt from Guide to the Exhibition of Amphibians and Reptiles, Cincinnati Society of Natural History Herpetology (from a Greek word meaning 'to creep') is a science which deals with two classes of cold-blooded vertebrates, the Amphibians and the Reptiles. The first class contains the frogs, toads, salamanders, and certain worm-like forms constituting a group called the Caecilians. The second, Reptiles, contains the turtles, snakes, lizards, crocidilians, and Rhynchocephalians. The key does not take the Caecilians into consideration. Key to Classes and Orders A. Skin without scales; young usually undergoing a metamorphosis. Amphibia. a. A tail present in adult stage. Order Caudata- the Salamanders. aa. Tail absent in aduOrder Salentia- the Frogs and Toads. AA. Skin with scales; young similar to parents when born. Reptilia. a. Anal opening transverse. b. Copulatory organs absent. Order Rhynchocephalia. bb. Copulatory organs present. Order Squamata-Snakes and Lizards. (These may be told apart by the absence of external ear-opening and eyelids in the former and presence of them in latter). Excerpt from Report on the Reptiles and Amphibians of Ohio The tadpoles or young of frogs, and probably also of salamanders live almost, or entirely, upon vegetable matter. However, in some cases they are said to have eaten decomposing animal matter, and even other tad poles. Prof. Baird states that this may be taken advantage of to clean skeletons by placing the two together in water. The larval Rana sylvatica he found to be the most effective, as these devoured the macerated flesh, leaving a ligamentous skeleton. Their food primarily is vegetable, and it is probable that they never attack their own Species unless driven by hunger or after they have attained a good degree of development. There is first an effort to train the original powers of the individual and make him self-active, quick at observation, and free in his thinking. Next, the new education endeavors, by the reading of books and the study of the wisdom of the race, to make the child or youth a participator in the results of experience of all mankind. These two movements may be made antagonistic by poor teaching.
