Gray Steel and Black Oil

Gray Steel and Black Oil PDF Author: Thomas Wildenberg
Publisher: US Naval Institute Press
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 368

Book Description
Gray Steel and Black Oil is the first full-length treatment of the development of the fleet oiler concept in the U.S. Navy. The author, Thomas Wildenberg, authoritatively addresses the logistics of how fleets are able to stay at sea in an operational mode, a long-ignored but extremely important subject. For example, in World War II refueling at sea provided the U.S. Navy with the mobility it needed to accomplish its island-hopping advance toward Japan, as advocated in War Plan Orange. He explains how underway replenishment enabled U.S. carriers to range freely across the Pacific in the first months of the war, and later to remain on station far from their bases for weeks at a time. Today the refueling capability of a navy is as important as ever. With this book Wildenberg charts the concept from the first fleet oilers of World War I onward. He examines the Navy's plans between the wars, documents the experience of World War II, and covers the postwar transition period, Korea, Vietnam, and the Gulf War. Numerous tables on ship design and capabilities, descriptions of ship types, photographs of every class of U.S. Navy fleet oiler, and ship drawings are also included.

Book Description
Despite ongoing efforts to find alternatives, oil is still one of the most critical—and valuable—commodities on earth. This two-volume set provides extensive background information on key topics relating to oil, profiles countries that are major producers and consumers of oil, and examines relevant political issues. Aside from air and water, oil is perhaps the most valuable natural resource. Oil supplies the tremendous energy needs of the modern world. What exactly is "oil," where does it come from, how does it get consumed, and who is using it? This encyclopedia provides clear answers to these questions and more, offering students entries on the fundamentals of the oil industry and profiles of the countries that play a major role in oil production and consumption. Volume 1 presents topical entries on critical concepts, key terms, major oil spills and disasters, and important organizations and individuals relating to the oil industry. Entries define terms such as "barrel" and "reserve," cover incidents such as the BP oil spill, and explain the significance of organizations such as OPEC. The second volume spotlights specific countries that are major producers, consumers, exporters, and importers of oil, from the United States to Russia to Saudi Arabia to Venezuela. Each profile shows readers the importance of oil in that country through a brief background history, data on its oil usage or production, information about major trading partners, and an explanation of political issues.

Ready for Anything

Ready for Anything PDF Author: Geoff Puddefoot

Book Description
Set up in August 1905, the Royal Fleet Auxiliary unofficial motto: Ready for Anything was originally a logistic support organisation, Admiralty-owned but run on civilian lines, comprising a miscellaneous and very unglamorous collection of colliers, store ships and harbour craft. This book charts its rise in fleet strength, capability and importance, through two world wars and a technical revolution, until the time when naval operations became simply impossible without it. Its earliest tasks were mainly freighting supplying the Royal Navys worldwide network of bases but in wartime fleets were required to spend much longer at sea and the RFA had to develop techniques of underway replenishment. This did not come to full fruition until the British Pacific Fleet operated alongside the Americans in 1944-45, but by then the RFA had already pioneered many of the procedures involved. This book combines a history of the service, including many little-known wartime operations, with data on the ships, and a portrait of life in the service gleaned from personal accounts and recollections. Half way between a civilian and a military service, the RFA has never received the attention it deserves, but this book throws a long-overdue spotlight on its achievements.
