As a little boy, Sekoyya had always had strange dreams. Moving into his new house in the ghetto changed things, his dreams became more real and more terrifying than before. It didn't help that he lived next door to an abandoned funeral home and across the Boulevard from an old graveyard. Accepting a dare from his brother, Ron, and his gangster wanna-be friend, Tyrone, they would all set out on a quest for the truth of strange happenings in the funeral home. Sekoyya would learn mystical things about himself and about the strange neighborhood that would change him forever. All three boys would enter the funeral home that night, but only two would leave. Eric Little was born on Jan 9, 1960 and grew up in a poor urban neighborhood with his mother, brothers, and sisters in Norfolk, Virginia. At age ten, he began writing short stories and poetry completing his first script-Erickta the Blood Beast must Die, at age twelve. Completing college at the University of Arizona in 1983 on a football scholarship, life led him away from his passion: writing. At age thirty-two, he wrote his first novel, Pools of Ancient Evil. Poetical Remains

Poetical Remains PDF Author: Samantha Matthews
Publisher: OUP Oxford
ISBN: 0191514489
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 320

Book Description
What happens to poets' genius when they die? The peculiar affinity which was felt to exist between their physical and literary 'remains' - their bodies and books - is the subject of this original cultural study, which concentrates on poets and poetry from the Romantic to late Victorian period. Poetical Remains deals with issues such as the place of burial, the kind of monument deemed appropriate, the poet's 'last words' and last poems, the creation of memorial volumes, and the commercial boost given to a poet's reputation by 'celebrity death', focussing in each case on the powerful, complex, often unstated but ever-present connections between the poet's body and their poetic 'corpus'. As well as the works of the poets themselves, Matthews draws on contemporary biography and memoirs, family correspondence, newspaper reports, and tribute verse among other texts, and places the literature of poetic death in its social, material, and affective context: the conflict between the idealized 'country churchyard' and the secular urban cemetery, the ideal of private, familial burial as against the pressure for public ceremony, the recuperation of death-in-exile as an extension of national pride, transactions between spiritual and material, poetic and pragmatic, in a secularizing age. Some of the most poignant and darkly comic moments in nineteenth-century literary history arose around the deathbeds of poets and the events which followed their deaths. What happened to Shelley's heart, and to Thomas Hood's monument; the different fates which dictated that the first Poet Laureate appointed by Queen Victoria, Wordsworth, was buried in his family plot in Grasmere, while her second, Tennyson, was wrested from his family's grasp and interred in Westminster Abbey - these are some of the stories which Matthews tells, and which are bound up in a sustained and powerful argument about the way in which our culture deals with artists and their work on the boundary between life and death.

We all know the story of Jesus told by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, but what about the version according to Judas? In this witty, original and teasingly controversial account, some forty years after the death of Jesus, Judas finally tells the story as he remembers it. Looking back on his childhood and youth from an old age the gospel writers denied him, Judas recalls his friendship with Jesus; their schooling together; their families; the people who would go on to be disciples and followers; their journeys together and their dealings with the powers of Rome and the Temple. His is a story of friendship and rivalry, of a time of uncertainty and enquiry, a testing of belief, endurance and loyalty.

Bag of Bones

Bag of Bones PDF Author: J. North Conway
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 0762785144
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 317

Book Description
Completing J. North Conway’s widely acclaimed trilogy of Gilded Age New York City Crime—following King of Heists and The Big Policeman—Bag of Bones combines the era’s affluence, decadence, and corruption with a gruesome deed fit for the tabloids of today. In 1878, the body of multi-millionaire A. T. Stewart was stolen from St. Mark’s Churchyard. The ghoulish crime, the chase for the culprits, the years-long ransom negotiations, and the demise of the Stewart retail empire fed a media frenzy. When the widow Stewart eventually exchanged $20,000 for a burlap bag of bones on a country road, not everyone was convinced that the remains were truly those of “The Merchant Prince of Manhattan,” the department store pioneer who had risen from the flood of Irish immigration to a place alongside names like Astor, Vanderbilt, and Rockefeller. As Bag of Bones details the futile tactics used by police to identify the grave robbers, it also unveils the villainy of Judge Henry Hilton, the Stewart family advisor who not only interfered in the case repeatedly but also dismantled a once-great business empire . . . all the while profiting quite nicely. By the end of this fascinating slice of history, one is left to wonder who displayed the greater evil: the grave robbers or Judge Hilton.
