Grain boundary segregation and intergranular fracture in molybdenum
Grain Boundary Segregation in Metals
Author: Pavel Lejcek
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642125050
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 249
Book Description
Grain boundaries are important structural components of polycrystalline materials used in the vast majority of technical applications. Because grain boundaries form a continuous network throughout such materials, their properties may limit their practical use. One of the serious phenomena which evoke these limitations is the grain boundary segregation of impurities. It results in the loss of grain boundary cohesion and consequently, in brittle fracture of the materials. The current book deals with fundamentals of grain boundary segregation in metallic materials and its relationship to the grain boundary structure, classification and other materials properties.

Grain Boundary Composition and Intergranular Fracture of Steels: Detection of grain boundary segregation in steels
Grain Boundary Segregation in Iron-molybdenum Alloys
Grain Boundary Segregation of Impurities in Metals and Intergranular Brittle Fracture

Languages : en
Pages : 37
Book Description
The report discusses two investigations of temper embrittlement in low alloy quenched and tempered steel. Part I deals with additive effects of phosphorus and antimony as embrittling impurities in this type of grain-boundary embrittlement. Part II describes efforts to develop a method of determining the degree of segregation of alloys and impurities to grain-boundaries during temper embrittlement. The method under study involves neutron activation analysis of the etchant from etched intergranular fracture surfaces. (Author).

Book Description
The results of this program are: The first direct experimental evidence for the phenomena of metastable grain boundary segregation and a model for its relation to the influence of environments on fracture behavior; The influence of grain boundary segregation on the grain boundary fracture of carburized steels; The segregation of As to the transgranular fracture surface of steels and how it related to the lowering of the fracture resistance of these steels; An electrochemical method of charging samples with both hydrogen and hydrogen recombination poisons to subsequently induce grain boundary failure in the Auger electron spectroscopy fracture studies of iron and nickel alloys; The application of X ray photoelectron spectroscopy to determine changes in electronic structure that can be related to the nature of the local bonding in the segregated region of iron intermetallic compounds.
