Book Description
Excerpt from Goethes Faust, Vol. 1: The First Part The general conception of the proposed drama, he tells us, lay clear in his mind at an early date; but from the first his procedure was unmethodical. The legend yielded, or could be made to yield, a hint for every mood: poetry, pathos, humor, satire, hocus pocus all were there. And so he worked in a desultory way, writing a passage here and a passage there, now a soliloquy, now a song, and again a bit of dialogue or a succession of dialogues, according as he had caught the vision of this or that interesting situation. Thus, without concern for acts or for a logical develop ment of his plan, he allowed his work to take shape in a series of pictures, leaving the intervals to be filled in by the imagination. In this way a number of pictures (we may call them scenes had been written down previous to his settlement at Weimar in Novem ber, 1775. Book Description
Excerpt from Goethes Faust, Vol. 1: Edited With Introduction and Commentary The present edition of the First Part of Goethe's Faust aims to be a modest contribution on the part of American scholarship to the commemoration of the approaching centenary of the first publication of the drama, one of'the most important events in the history of human civilization. Even before the ap pearence of the completed poem, Schelling, one of the foremost thinkers of the time, had with prophetic vision called it a fountain of youth from which the rejuvenation of life and science was destined to flow. Recognizing the deep philosophical meaning of this characteristic German production, Schelling's re marks ushered in at the same time the so-called phil osophical interpretation of the drama which pre vailed during the subsequent long period of the domination of Hegel's Aest/zetz'cs. Book Description
Excerpt from Faust, Vol. 1 The editor of an edition for American students, then, may rightfully claim to be exempt from an ofice which even the most competent German scholars would hesitate to undertake. All that the present introduction can at tempt is briefly this. To set forth to the industrious student the general nature of the poem, to explain the functions of the leading characters, namely Faust and Mephistopheles, and to show (with extreme brevity) the connection between the original Faust-legend and Goethe's treatment of it. The Notes treat chiefly of German manners and customs, obscure allusions, and syntactical constructions that are more than ordinarily difficult. They presuppose throughout that the student has already mastered the grammar of the German lan guage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Goethe's Faust, Vol. 1: A Commentary In such universal sense the periphery Of the Faust legend broadens out into the twilight Of History, reaching far back into Asia and taking in the very origin of the long human discipline. Goethe has not omitted this far-reaching sug gestion; in the Prologue in Heaven we shall see him calling up the grand dualism in its two persons, the Lord and Mephisto, who exist, as it were, before the human beginning, and talk together about the terrestrial being, Man, and his destiny. Indeed, the very form and conception of this dialogue carries us back to the book of Job, one Of the Oldest Of Asiatic books. Thus at the start of the poem, and underlying it, we find the spiritual or Hebraic strand; in the same Prologue we shall have a hint of the natural or Aryan strand, in that cosmical song of the Archangels, singing Of Sun and Earth, of Light and Darkness, of the conflicts of the elements, as their image of the grand struggle, which struggle, however, has not yet deepened in them to the spiritual denial of Mephisto. Perhaps this thought did not lie in the conscious intention of the Poet; but he is a seer, beholding realities and if we would compre pend him, we must follow up his vision with our thought and knowledge. Book Description
Excerpt from The Philosophy of Goethe's Faust, Vol. 1 These lectures were written for delivery, and were not prepared by their author with special view to publication. Under these circumstances they may very well contain some passages which he would himself have emended had he lived to see them put in print. Nevertheless, the editor has thought it best to leave the text in the form which Mr. Davidson gave it, and has only ventured to make the obvious minor corrections in proof. The editor has also supplied the missing chapter headings, and has added translations of the passages which in the manuscript were given in German, wherever the meaning is not apparent from the context. In almost all such cases the translations are taken from Miss Swanwick's version, and the translations so taken are inclosed in brackets.
